Hi All,
Bizarre problem here, not sure if you guys have ever run into this.
I own a 2010 Mazda 3 SGT, the interior of the vehicle has been kept in great condition. This past weekend I walked into my car and noticed the plastic on the dashboard seemed to appear shinier than usual. I realized the plastic had become so soft and hot, that it was literally melting off! (See attached pictures)
Merely touching the dash board with my finger was enough to cause the finger to "sink in" and cause a permanent scar in the dash board. I must confess that I don't use a sunshade very often and I live in Texas, but even so, I don't think this is normal ! This has started happening with the end closest to the windshield and is slowly spreading to the sides.I am not sure whether this has been caused by a cleaning chemical used by a previous owner or from excess use of interior detailing materials at car wash or a bad dash itself!. I haven't had a interior detailing done in several months and only use a dry cloth to clean the dashboard.
Yesterday, I took the car to dealership and had the service reps look at it. They told me that they have not seen anything like this ever happen before. They offered me to replace the entire dashboard, but since my car is outside basic warranty (i have 46k miles on it) they offered to split the cost 50/50 and my out of pocket expense would be $550 including labor, taxes.
Also talked directly to Mazda this morning and awaiting their resolution, but I am not very hopeful.
Would appreciate any advice on this issue. Do I have any alternatives other than completely replacing the dashboard? As you can see in the pics, it doesn't look that bad yet but obviously I don't want it to get worse , is there a way i can repair this and maybe use a dashboard cover or am i going to need a new one?
