My wife's '08 sedan had this problem. Open your trunk, & look at the latch. There should be a yellow switch on the right side. Try moving in to the other position & try again. It worked for hers. Basically that switch locks the trunk so a valet cannot get into it (if you have a valet key). I found the answer searching through old posts.

Yes the leaver must`ve been accidently moved, it happened to me once.

Regarding the valet key, I don`t think Mazda has one, I only got two keys when I bought my car and they are both full keys that will open all locks and start the car. I think this feature is for locking your belongings in the trunk when you visit a questionable neighbourhood, or when you park say in an airport. This way even if someone breakes in your car, they will have no way of opening the trunk, provided you also locked the rear seats so that they can`t be tilted.

Same thing happened to my girlfriend's 2006 Mazda 3. Must have bumped that little yellow lever somehow. I absolutely love this site. It has made me a hero with my girlfriend. I have fixed so much stuff I never thought I would ever tackle, but posters have posted full procedures with pictures and warnings and everything. Wonderful! Moved that little yellow switch back today and told her "Fixed it!" Ha ha ha! Thanks again.
