Three quick speaker questions

1. Does anyone know the ohm rating of the stock speakers? I'm thinking about replacing the stock 6x8s with the oft-mentioned Infinity Reference 6802 speakers. I know the Infinitys are 4 ohm speakers. Before I make a decision, I'd like to know if the stock speakers are 2 or 4 ohms.

2. Has anyone made this swap without a seperate amp? I know the speakers won't sound as good without more power than the stock amp can give, but if the Infinitys sound better and provide decent sound and volume I'll be happy.

3. Is there a good place to put an amp in the hatchback that doesn't affect cargo usage? I don't want to use the trunk floor (maybe under the shelf?) and I'd rather not use the seat back.

I have searched around and I haven't seen a good answer to my questions...I didn't really want to start a new thread, but I couldn't think of a better way to find this out...

Thanks.

1. The stock speakers are 6 ohms, subs are rated at 2 or 4 ohms.

2. There are some who've simply swapped out their stock speakers, I did everything expect the HU. The improvements may be marginal at best if you just swap out the speakers.

3. I mounted my two amps on the seat back. A couple of others have mounted their amps underneath the false floor in the cargo area.

Actually, the stock speakers are 4ohms. Most speakers in cars today, and in the car audio world, is 4ohm.

Dont expect super bass or anything. You may not get a lot of mid bass, but it will definately sound sharper and clearer.

If you dont want to lose space, under the cargo tray.

Actually the difference between stock and replacements speakers can be dramatically different, even when using the stock head unit. You won't be able to push the speakers real hard as the replacments are likely to be less efficient than the stock speakers. But the loss is typically only something like 2dB. The Infinity Reference line is more efficient than higher end speakers, so they tend to do okay on lower power systems. Infinity specs them as being able to be driven by amps of as low as 2 watts.

And the biggest weakness of the stock system will indeed be deep, clean bass. The cheap amps found in these systems have little deep bass output.

Thanks for the info. I was afraid these were 2 ohm stock speakers and that wouldn't bode well for putting in 4 ohm aftermarket speakers.

Compared to the stock speakers and their bass response, how do the Reference series perform? Similar but cleaner and a little quieter or is there something "missing" if you don't have an amp?

It's nice to know that an amp could fit under the cargo tray...that'd be a great place for one IMHO.

Thanks for taking all my questions. If you think I'm annoying, just make fun of me behind my back. :)

And bluntman - your 1 out of 3 is better than my 0 out of 3

So, you're saying that adding the Infinitys improved everything? Nice.

I just ordered two pairs from Crutchfield. The second pair was 1/2 off, so I got the order for $160 including 2 day shipping. Not bad...

i'm using the 6800cs up front and 6802cf in back, and the full range of sound is MUCH clearer...night and day difference. BUT there's a lot less bass with the Infinitys than with the stock speakers. at low volume, there's hardly any bass. when you crank the volume up some, you get more bass, and it's clean sounding, but there's not much of it.

all in all it's definitely an improvement. but i'd seriously consider amping them or adding a sub (i'm doing the latter), or else listening to them with the volume cranked so they'll put out SOME bass.

Thanks for the advice. My main complaint with the stock speakers is the muddiness. As long as the Infinitys aren't too much quieter, I'll be happy. If I'm not, I'll get them amped. I don't listen to things as loudly as I used to, but I do appreciate good sound.

Interesting that you are not getting good Bass response from your setup. I installed the exact same setup, and am very satisfied with the Bass. With the factory speakers, I had the Bass setting turned all the way up (+6), and still didn't like what I was getting. With the Infinifys, I have the Bass set at +2, and it is strong enough for my tastes. Much better than stock.

When you installed your Infinitys, did you also keep the stock tweeter? Just curious...

Nope. I installed the Ininity tweeters. Kudos to VaBooM for his excellent instructions. I used industrial strength velcro to attach the crossovers inside the door. All 4 speakers took me about 1 1/2 hours to install. FYI, I stopped at the dealer and picked up a handful of extra door panel clips, as I knew I'd damage a few in the installation process. Anyway, the infinitys may not be the best speaker out there, but it is worlds better than stock. Naturally, YMMV.

bmcdaniels--
as i said, there's little bass response when the volume is low, but once you crank it up to about 10-12 (which is much quieter than 10-12 with stock speakers, btw) you can hear the bass. the response is there, it's just not up to the volume of the rest of the sound until you really give it tha juice.

it's weird that we seem to have different experiences with the same speakers. maybe your stock HU has more power? ;)

You know, I think you might have something there. I purchased the car in Texas, and as you know, everything is bigger and better in Texas! :D

I installed the 6802s all around this morning.

- Wow! What a difference. I don't think the stock speakers could be any worse.
- The stock amp can handle the 6802s just fine. I don't notice any difference in playable volume. The stock speakers might have gone louder, but the sound was so horrid you'd never do it.
- Installation was VERY easy. vaBoom's instructions are perfect. I did not re-use the stock water shield, but I did cover the baffles with loose duct tape, so I think I'm all good.
- Again, WOW! The sound is great. The bass is more linear and everything is much clearer. I can't believe I was ever unsure if I wanted to do this.
- The stock tweeters work OK with the Infinitys. They actually blend together just fine. I wouldn't win any audio competitions, but I'm very happy and that's what counts.

Thanks, everyone, for all your help.
