strut replacement, anything else I should do while replacing?

2006 m3 2.3 with 84k miles. Have a bad strut so I was planning on replacing the front two with Monroe quick struts and the rears with new shock absorbers. Going to do my rotors and brakes while I'm at it.

Question is, is there anything else that I should replace while I'm at it that's in the area?

CV axle???

OK so I got everything installed and while under the car I noticed a lot of grease on what I think is the CV axle? It was not taut like the passenger side. Anyone know what this is?

On another issur, changed the brakes and rotors, but when I changed the rears the pads did not look used at all and they are the original pads.... Anyone know how to check if the rear brakes work.

Also I now hear a sponge sound when I press on the brakes. The brakes feel fine but make a noise every time I press on them.
