RPM at 65, 70, 75 MPH?

Other vehicles I have driven cruise 70 mph at about 2,500-2,750 RPM, whereas my 3 at more like 3000 at 65-70 mph. And 75 mph is like 3500, its almost 4000 rpm if I go up to 80.. Does this seem a little high or is it normal for the 3?

Actually the 5 is officially a station wagon but people can't wrap their head around the sliding doors and third row seat so it's sold as a MAV and recognised as a minivan. But yeah, the 5 comes with a MTX(which I dearly miss, goddam monkey shifting ATX). Here in Quebec people buy almost as much manuals as automatics, and trying to get a manual 5 is hard. I originally wanted a manual GT but they told me it would be a minimum 3 months wait. The manual GS I got was the last one on the lot.

I drove the Mazda5 with both Manual and Automatic transmission.
At 62mph the Manual ran at 3000RPM and the Automatic at 2800RPM.
At 68 mph the Manual ran 3200 and the Automatic at 3000RPM.
At 75mph the manual ran at 3900RPM and the Automatic at 3500RPM.
At 81mph the Manual ran at 4200RPM and the Automatic at 4000.
And finally at 86mph the Manual ran at 4500RPM and the Automatic at 4400RPM.

This car is not fast....it's been established here. Take what you see here and enter into the long term section of the brain instead of getting a ticket or losing your license.

I know that if I wanted to drive more than 100 mph, it wouldn't be in this car or any economy car for that matter.

just like I told the other guy, spare me your preaching and lets get back to the topic at hand.

^^^^^ future statistic..... No one should be driving over 100mph on any public road in the interest of their own safety, never mind the safety of others. I picked the mazda 3 because of best-in-class handling, acceleration, and looks----NOT in order to drive it like an F1 car.

Spare me your statistics buddy on why you purchased the car and for what reasons. If you read what I originally wrote in my post, I was interested in seeing how fast my 3 would go. The freeway was empty at the time, no cops and no other drivers were around so I tried it out. I just wasn't expecting it to cut off at 110mph.

just came back from a weekend trip and out of no where I decide to push my 3 and see how fast she would go. The roads were empty so I didn't have to worry about other cars. Anyway, I get all the way to 110mph and the car feels as though she could keep go further but guess what it cuts off. Speed drops back 100mphs. WTF?! I tried it again, same shyt. OMG! My 02 protege could go faster then this car and it had less horse power. :x Damn you Mazda3!

I'm experiencing a similiar situation too. I do alot of highway driving and I notice in 4th gear when i'm averaging 70 - 80 mphs I'm at 4000rpms. Urgh!! I have to throw it into 5th gear and the rpms drop from 4k to 3k. I was averaging 23.7 miles per gallon prior to noticing this. Since I keep it in a higher gear when on the highways I'm avergaing 24.6mpg or better, which is still low but its slowly getting better.

thinking about gearing, i'd like to shorten my 2nd and 3rd, and get a taller 4th as well. seems accelareation would pick up at least a little in 2nd and 3rd, and 4th for the gas mileage of course

Please remind me not to be on the same freeway as you next time you are going 135mph, I prefer to live out the rest of my life..... Imagine what an accident at that speed would do to this little car even with advanced air bags

Not on the interstate, that'd be dangerouse for not only me, but the other drivers, actually there is a good staight stretch of road down here with a level grade and no turns for about 10 miles (4 lanes, and out in the country), and the biggest factor NO TRAFFIC. I don't like speeding around other cars, cause it's hard to predict their actions...

it looks like 909 posted speeds for the speed3....155mph is the top speed for the speed3, not your everyday 3.
That chart is not a "Mazda 3 speed chart" It's a mathematical chart based on gear ratios and tire size. It just happens the input I used was the specs of the 3. We use charts like this when determining gearing changes, tire size changes, etc... The original post was asking if there was a problem with her 3 beacause it rev'd so high at highway speed. If your clutch is slipping it can be a problem but how do you know for sure? Easy, look at the chart. If your engine RPM doesn't match the mathematical answer then there is slippage somewhere. The chart does not imply the car goes 800 MPH, or that the engine revs to 8k freely. Please don't interpret it as such.

When you're in 1st gear and floor it, the rev limiter will kick in eventually preventing you from grenading the engine. This is an electrical kill to the spark. When you're in 4th and hit 118MPH and you're not at the ignition limiter, the top speed limiter kicks in and it kills fuel, these are 2 different limits, remember rev=spark and speed=fuel.
I have a question about this limiter thing too. Did only some cars have that? Beacuse I keep hearing of this mythical 118MPH limiter that our Mazda3's have, I don't know if maybe mine just isn't working or something, or they didn't put them on the 2004's but I've had my speedometer up to the 135MPH mark, and nothing shut down or cut spark, or anything like that...is there a reason, or am I just imagining it all??
