Rear Windshield Noise (Tapping sound)

Hi,

I've had my 3 for a little over two weeks now, and I have no problems with it...except:

When driving, there is a faint tapping sound that comes from the rear windshield (almost sounds like water dripping in a tin pie plate). It usually happens when I hit some sort of bumpy terrain (not neccessarily pot-hole type, but even just an uneven road).

I plan on calling the dealership about it soon, but has anyone else run into this problem?

Mine is a sedan.

Its just the lightest noise...really have to listen for it to hear it. I'm going to call the dealer tomorrow...have to call to "cancel" my wheel warranty anyway.

Just so you guys don't sit here and wait, I didn't bring the car in. The traffic was absolutely terrible heading to my dealer, so I said screw it.

I'm going to bring it in tomorrow morning, when I have some free time and traffic won't suck. However, after some further consideration/inspection, it may have something to do with the antenna. I'm not 100% positive, but that could be it.

I shall update you all Saturday at some point.

So, just got back from the dealer.  Brought it in around 2, and the tech manager immediately said he wouldn't be working on it today, and that I'd have to bring it in for a day during the week.  He explained it as being a noise they would most likely have to "chase" and would need time to do so.  However, he had a tech drive around with me to listen to the noise and see if it was something simple.

After driving around for 15 or so, and him poking and proding everything in the rear 1/3 of the car, these are some possible answers he came up with:

- Tapping of the fuel cap anchor line (I didn't think it would be loud enough, but when he tapped it himself I could hear it in the front
- Mere body settling sounds
- Simply a loose trunk panel (again, not a huge deal)
- The tire, jack, trunk hydrolics, etc giving a slight rattle
- Possibly antena or rear defrost wiring not secured properly
- Body panels that weren't set properly

The tech said the rear windshield didn't seem loose at all, so that probably isn't it.  He said it more of a metal sound anyway.  Finally, he told me I can bring it in if I want, but it doesn't sound like a serious sound at all.  The tech manager said he wouldn't recommend the hastle at this point, but told me to def. bring it in if it gets louder or more noticable. He also said that he had heard of only one other case of this, so it might just be an inherent "tic" with the 3's.

It doesn't bug me, so as long as its not serious or a warning sign of anything major, I can live with it.

maybe some a-hole tossed a washer or a paperclip into your roof opening when the sunroof was open.  Now it's sitting back by the rear windshield and doing a little hop every time you hit a bump.

Hope you can sort it out.  That would drive me nutty (er). Open the sunroof and slam on the brakes from speed (check your rearview first ; ). See if something slides forward far enough for you to reach or see with a flashlight.

Highly doubt either of those causes, since this has been happening since day one (and I haven't backed into anyone...?). Never thought of opening the sunroof and lookin in...maybe I'll do that tonight. I'll keep you all posted.
