Patterns for tire rotation?

The only time that I got my tires rotated on my OEM tires, they simply swapped the front and back tires, so:

A---B
| | |
| | |
| | |
C---D

So they swapped A with C, and swapped B with D. If I were to have them rotated again, how would they swap the tires according to my diagram?

it should be:

original
AB
CD

first rotation
DC
AB

basically move fronts to back, and switch either the front of the backs left-right. this assuming you have a symmetrical and non-directional tire.

if you have directionals you can only do

original
AB
CD

first rotation
CD
AB

Thanks for the diagram. That's what my question was really going for. Since I have the stock RSA and my first rotation used the 'D' pattern. Would my second rotation be something like 'A' or 'C'?

Definitely not C because that is for RWD and AWD. I don't remember if the RSA were directional but if they aren't then you can go with pattern A.

What pattern you go with depends on if you have directional tires. If your tires are directional (the OEM Goodyear RSA's are), you can only rotate them front to back. If non-directional, then doing a crisscross is better.

So in your case specifically, they should only ever be rotated front to back.

I don't think they are directional. They are asymmetrical, so they can rotate in either direction. I'm sure I will be corrected if I'm wrong :)

the oem tires are not directional. don't be confused by the "this side out" written on the sidewall. that doesn't mean it's directional.

So you CAN criss cross then? So again, if pattern D was done in the first rotation, what pattern should I rotate them next?

Are you seeing any uneven wear between right and left sides? If you're not, then you're fine just repeating the front to back swap. If you are seeing a difference from side to side (or just for the sheer unbridled hell of it if you want) then go with the x-pattern. Ideally you'd want to just do a forward or rear cross consistently every time, but since you already have been running on the front to back swap, it does provide you with the opportunity to look for any un-evenness in the wear.

...and if anybody cares to try to rationally explain why the rearward cross is better for rear-drive vehicles and forward for front-drive, I'm all ears.

True about the "this side out", but IIRC there are also direction of rotation markings on the sidewall as well. If you were to cross the tires, the crossed ones would be rotating backwards against those markings.

I'd double check to make sure the tires aren't directional, and use pattern A.

If they are directional, you did it right the first time, just repeat that.

You do not recall correctly. The Eagle RS-A is an asymmetrical, non-directional tire.
