Overfilled oil - no symptoms?

Hey all;

I know there are a lot of topics about this, I searched. I overfilled my oil by a fair amount because I made the noob mistake of checking it and topping it up WHILE THE CAR WAS STILL JACKED. stupid me.

So now my oil is measuring at/just below the 'S' bend on the oil dipstick. I didn't have time to figure out a way to drain it because when i found out i screwed up it was about time to go to work. So i went for a short drive and there was no evidence of:
- Foam/bubbles on oil dipstick
- smoke
- abnormal engine operation/CELs.

Does this mean I'm ok, or am I still risking screwing a lot of things up by driving? I think i put in about 5L/quarts (or maybe 5.5 absolute max), but I have done the BSD.

Thanks guys!

I took my 09 MZ3 Hatch to the dealership earlier this week to have an oil change done. After asking the cost of a full synthetic oil change they told me they would still do the oil change if I supplied the oil and would do it at a discounted rate, as they weren't supplying the oil. That being said - I brought 5 quarts of Mobil 1 full synthetic 5W20 oil to the mazda dealership. Knowing our cars only take about 4.5 qrts I asked for the remaining oil back - in case of needing to top off or for my other cars. Whatever. At the end, asked for the my oil back & the tech said the engine took all 5 qrts. The oil is def. higher than the "max" on the dip stick - but after reading your posts, I'm glad to hear that 5 qrts wont harm the engine. I can not wait to not live in an apartment complex so I can work on it myself again.

Have you had any issues arise since your last posts? Thanks

[/quote]I actually ended up draining it out by slightly removing the bolt when i had my car on ramps 2 wks later. I dont think you'll have any problems, but its really not that hard to do.
FYI i had also done the balance shaft delete which allows for more oil to be held.

I think you'll probably be ok, just after driving for a bit check your dipstick and make sure that you dont see any foam in the oil - if you do, thats bad!!

Awsome! Just did an oil change with a little overfill. Did a general Google search and lead me back to our sight!

Sounds like I'll be OK. Maybe half a quart too much. I'll watch for FOAM! ;)
