It also doesn't explain why multiple mags have published that the Mz3 did 8.3 to 8.5 in their 0-60 tests.

I noted earlier that some people have speculated that the slow times may have come from people who made an extra shift to 3rd. I believe that's what the poster above just "discovered." Thinking that if it only goes to 60 in 2nd that another shift is needed to get to 62.2, thus the slower time.

This is possible, but as I said above, it doesn't explain the other slower times reported for just the 0-60. Likewise, if someone just did the 0-60 in 7.4 and was still accelerating as they shifted into 3rd, there is no way it would take another 1.5 seconds to get to 62.

2-3 shift

The shift from 2nd to 3rd really kills your momentum, and the combination of the taller gear and lower rpm after the shift will hurt acceleration numbers. I don't know about a second and a half though, that seems a little high. Just last night, I had a little run against an Escalade and was right with him till I shifted out of second at about 6300-6400 rpm. It was no contest once I hit third (I got a nice view of that large Cadillac arse). In town from about 0-90km/h, this car is pretty impresive.

Atoweek's number of the Mazda3sport:
0-60 mph: 7.97 sec
0-100 km/h (62.1 mph): 8.43 sec

Ok. This looks more like half a second. Altough its one of the slowest 0-60 mph that I've read. I was closer on the conversion km/mph numbers!

Come on guys..this is blatant troll baiting, don't be weak minded and fall for it..getting all angry and cursing. It's just some semi-literate kid (from Richmond not doubt) who wants to see how many Mazda fanatics he get get to stomp their feet in indignation over a lame slur on a hook.

I know, I agree with you, but these kinds of posts come up over and over and over and over again. It just gets frustrating sometimes. Mazda3Forums.com is one of the best automotive communities on the Net and over the past few weeks I've just been seeing more and more pointless, unconstructive posts...
No, you got it right the first two posts. The fact of the matter is, half the people on this board has no concept of the word "power". They've never driven anything that would remotely be considered "fast" by people who drives "real" sport cars. Sh1t, you got people who are b1tching about fuel economy.. oh... I got the 2.0 because ah.... its.. lighter... and it's better on the fuel economy... and it is just as fast as the 2.3... LOL Dude, get an education, get a real job with a real income and I bet they won't be saying the things they are saying on the board.

The moral of the story is, be happy with what you got. But know this... you are driving a Mazda3 not a M3. And yes, the Mazda3 would be considered slow by lots of people. Just not to the highschool kid who just upgraded from riding a bicycle to school. Maybe that kid ba8o81 is trying to start sh!t, but if you are secure enough with what you got then you wouldn't care.
ill get a 2.0 because we dont get the 2.3 offered in europe! :D

THat's why testing of the Mazda3 0-100kmh and 0-60mph are so different (8,9seconds versus 7,4seconds) for only 2.2miles/h difference.
I disagree on those times. How could there be a 1.5 second difference between 0-60mph and 0-100km/h? The conversion of 60mph to km/h is about 98km/h. How could it take 1.5 seconds more to increase the speed of the 3 by 2km/h???
Actually 60mph is more like 96kph. 4km can be a big difference in time when a shift is needed.

Look in "the 3 in the news" section, there is a link to Carguide's test of the 3, they also report time in the mid 8sec. range. It's a European review so their measurements are in kilometres. People were ragging that the Canadian reviewers couldn't drive because of the 8sec. times, but it appears review from country's that use kilometre are getting the same times.

Mazda's are not known for pure speed, but for handling.I'll take the handling anyday. Anyone can go fast in a straight line, however do you ever notice how many people you lose going around a corner on the highway. :D

That's what it's all about.

This makes seven 0-60 times I've seen for the 3 (and I'm not counting 0-100km/h times) and this is the 3rd fastest in that group.

This is good info as it does provide a measurement for comparing 0-60mph vs 0-100kmh. Likely to have been the same drivers too. It is also consistent with several of the other numbers I've seen, which had 0-60 times around 8.3/8.4 and 0-100 times at 8.7/8.9.

back to the main title...

i'm not a race-guy, but the car seems much faster when no-one else is in the car. i know, i know....150lbs can make a big difference.
but i just wanted to point out, that the car is pretty quick when no one else is in the car. it kinda sucks, cuz when someone wants to see how fast it really is, they'll have to drive it by themselves. but i don't want anyone else driving my car.

for me, I am not getting my 3 for racing, so it seems fine. I shift gear at 3000rpm rather than a higher rate. But if I want a fast car, I'll get the Mazdaspeed version, or if I won the lottery, I'll get the M3 or C55 or S4

Mazdaspeed protégé????

Right now the price of the mazdaspeed protégé is almost the same price as the top of the line mazda3. The Speed has 10 more horse power, but you have to deal with turbo lag, and it doesn't come with leather or automatic lights, or automatic rain sensor. I guess it's a personal thing, but i prefer the mazda3.

Typically, as far as American car magazines go, Autoweek traditionally posts slower acceleration times than others (Road and Track, Car and Driver). I have trouble believing times much slower than 8.0 sec based on the Autoweek times and those I've seen in other American mags. In my mind 8.3-8.4 seconds is just the sign of crummy drivers.

on Mazda.com there is a link to money magazine's article about the rebirth of mazda, and they list the 3's 0-60 time at 7.3 seconds.

0-60 in as fast as you can get it there :p

Horsepower and torque are one thing, but for cars in our class this thing is fast. Civics, Impreza RS, Jettas, Golfs, Lancers, etc. We're pretty much on par with these vehicles.

Obviously there are other cars out there that will smoke the 3s or 3GT, whatever it's called in your area. In the class of economy car though, good luck ;-)

WHAT MAKES THE MAZDA 3 SO GREAT IS THAT ITS NOT A CIVIC BECAUSE ITS NOT YOUR TYPICAL RICE ROCKET ITS NOT A CAR THAT IS MEANT FOR PERFORMANCE BUT ITS FAST IT WILL BEAT ANY CIVIC ANY DAY AND WITH THE RIGHT ADJUSTMENTS IT WILL TAKE ON THE S2000 BUT I BOUGHT MINE BECAUSE EVERBODY AND THEIR MOMMAS HAVE A CIVIC SO I WAS NOT INTERESTED IN THEM BUT THATS MY OPINION

what do you guys want from a 17k car, point is... this car is doesnt cost much and it gets me from point a to point b.... there is no need to speed around cause the law says!!!! NO!!!!!!!!

this car has pleanty of power for its size and price!

I agree with Dub....

Yeah, I've taken the car to 100mph before (well, 99.8). But generally I'm not speeding beyond the flow of traffic, and I sure as hell am not going to go race in traffic.

For the price, the car has the power it should, if not more.

Oh, and I didn't buy the car because I didn't want a civic, I bought it because I didn't want a Matrix! :D

Not to sound like a jerk, but can you please not type in ALL CAPS? It's kind of annoying.
