I have a 2004 Mazda 3s with 75k miles and it just started making a extremely loud clicking noise from the right (passenger) side of the engine. I am familiar with the sound of the injectors and the VVT ticking, but this is definitely different. It sounds like a bearing is going bad somewhere in the serpentine system. The noise is not coming from within the engine. It is most pronounced when the engine is cold, but will also coming and go when the engine is warm. I haven't noticed any performance problems.
Any ideas? It sounds like the top idler bearing, but I was wondering about the AC compressor and alternator as well. Any help would be appreciated as I have a 1200 mile journey coming up and I'm getting a little apprehensive.
