How long did you guys wait to romp on your Speed? Mine has 300 miles on it and I plan on taking it easy (under 3k) until about 1,000 miles. I was also wondering do you guys put synthetic oil in yours? I heard it was a no no for the RX-8 and was wondering if it is the same for our cars?

Synthetic oil is fine. Its better in pretty much every way compared to dino oil.

The engine in the RX-8 is so completely different from anything in any other modern car that trying to draw a comparision is really kind of pointless. The oil is put through very different conditions in a rotary engine versus a typical otto cycle engine, so... Synthetic may not be recommended for the RX-8, but it is fine for us.

Royal Purple is all i will put in this car. At 2000 miles I made the switch from dino to RP and Let me tell you that is was a night and day difference. The car revved easier, it idled smoother. I doubt any power was made but the drivability certainly increased.

Yes, RP is the way to go. I can get it locally now in qts instead of having to mail order to CA for something like Redline.

It's better all around. It even drains better when you change it. I swear I get a bit more mpg. I only have to change it twice a year and it's purple like 2 cycle oil making it fun.

I'm not sure that Royal Purple handles fuel dilution very well. There is a member on these forums that has not had good oil analysis results. His name is Jahman, and I think he may have posted his UOA results somewhere.

PP, on the other hand, is supposed to handle FD very well -- so does RLI, but it is a bit more expensive.

Bottom line is that you can probably overcome FD with shorter OCIs. Would you rather do a shorter OCI with an expensive oil ... or would you rather do it with something more affordable? If the neat color of the oil is important to you, then you already have your answer

Reason why my both my brother and bestfriend switched to Amsoil

#11 ·
I just switched to 5w-30 pp at 3100 miles today. I'm going to do a UOA in probably 4k miles to see how it is. I was going to use amsoil but the stuff is like $8 a quart. I went to china-mart and got a 5 quart jug of pp for $20 and a single quart for $5.

#12 ·
Yes, dont use RP. Car ran great with it in, but the Fuel dilution was astronomically high. 3% to be exact. Thats 6 times as high as it should be. Someone else got 1.6% with RP as well, which is still very high even though it is half of what I had.

RP is a great oil, and I've used it in the past on other cars, but RP and this engine do not mix. You've been warned.

So what are you using now jahman? I need to change my oil in the next week or so. I've been using Mobil 1 since the first oil change and have been too lazy to send my sample to Blackstone Labs for a UOA. I've been thinking about Amsoil but am more heavily leaning towards PP now.

I used bobistheoilguy.com forums and found that pp seems to be the absolute best for combating the fuel dilution.

Yeah I'm using PP also. I have a sample of it ready to send in for a UOA as I just did an oil change a few days ago.

PP is Penzoil Platinum correct?

Yes.

is there anything bad about mobil 1
[/quote]

No, not really. Its ok. But costs the same if not a tad more than PP. PP is your best bet with this engine, it seems to love that oil for some odd reason.

Anyone ever do a UOA of Castrol? I was just curious to see how that held up...

If I'm correct, my dealer offers the Mobil 1 synthetic oil change on the Speeds. Is that standard for all Mazda dealers?

My dealer is an amsoil distributor. I've never asked how much an oil change would be using that but I image if a normal oil change is $35 then the amsoil synthetic would be close to $55-60. I did my own change yesterday using pp and it cost me $26 for the oil and $6 for the filter stuff (all after taxes).

I was going to go synth, but I change every 5k so not worth it for me in my opinon.
if I were doing some hard lapping under the arizona sun, that would be another story...I just dont see the benefit if you are anal about changing the oil.

#25 ·
Well, I do a lot of daily driving, over 30 min. both ways each day, along with my weekend outings, and here in the Bay Area, flow of traffic speed limit (according to the asshole drivers) is 80+ mph. I try very hard to not go over 75mph daily, but its a battle with about 99.9% of the drivers, no matter what lane you're in. So, main reason I considered synthetic oil changes.

I don't know if I would go 5k on dino oil on any turbo car even if mazda recommends 7500. I've seen plenty of UOA's of daily driven turbo cars with dino oil and they already start to look iffy at 3k. Granted thats during the summer but still, when synthetic is as cheap as it is there's really no reason not to use it as its better in every way no matter what kind of conditions you drive in for a turbo car.
