Are the RX8's THAT heavy?

My MS3 seems to be only able to muster around a 14.8 in the 1/4 and I'm beginning to wonder if it's the tire/wheel combo. I have Potenza S03 pole position tires on the wheels and they handle awesome but I don't know if they're great for straight line speed. In 2nd gear with it floored, they are struggling for traction through the whole gear. 1st gear - forget about it, I'll just spin.

Each wheel/tire when I installed it weighed over 50 pounds, I remember my 18x9 Cobra wheels I had on my mustang not even weighing that much.

I'm wondering the same thing about the stock Speed3 wheels. I just got 235/40/18 Bridgestone RE-01R and they weigh 27lbs each. Estimating my new rims will be ~18lbs each, that'll make my new combo ~45lbs. I'm wondering how much weight I'm saving if any.

how much do RX8 rims weigh anyway?

I know stock speed 3 is 24lbs

RX-8 should be around that same range...its only 1 inch wider but same 18 inch diameter

When I did the switch, I weighed my stock MS3 wheel and it was 21.5 pounds. The RX8 wheel weighed 24 pounds.

My last rims were 24.5 lbs. Yikes, I couldn't wait to get rid of those lead shoes. My current rims are 20.8. It's amazing what a difference a few pounds at the wheels make.

I agree. Back when I had my probe gt I drove it in winter and my winter wheels/tires were way lighter than my summer tires/wheels and I always noticed the difference right away when the winter wheels went on or off the car.

Are you sure you don't have that backwards? My RX8 wheels weighed about 21.5 lbs before I got them powdercoated, and about 22 lbs after. I've always heard that the stock MS3 wheels are heavier than RX8's.

How do you get a light weight tire? I've never even seen weight listed in the specs for them, but maybe it's because I wasn't looking for it.

Tire Rack does list weight in the tire specs. I didn't used to look for it either, but the differences in tire weight can be very surprising and can make more difference than wheel weight since they are on the outside edge of the rotation.

I was thinking about that the other day actually, I bet the difference of a single pound in tire weight is more significant than a 5 pound difference in wheel weight. My mechanical engineering coursework is so buried in my brain at this point however that I don't recall how to calculate it :)
