Anyone with the 2014 M3 figure out how to have the infotainment system read your incoming texts?

This was a cool bell and whistle when I was looking at buying it...but I cant seem to figure it out.

Well my phone gets treated like an incoming call, sort of. The infotainment system just switches to Bluetooth like I'm on a call and I'm able to control the reading and replying to texts through voice control of my phone.

It does not however integrate into the UI of the infotainment system nor does email.

I have a Lumia 1020.

On the phone side I had to choose an alternate Bluetooth connection method, but on the car no setup was needed. When I first set it up with the default method all that would happen when a text came in is it would switch to Bluetooth then back to audio almost instantly like I pressed the hang up button.

On the Gen 2 Bluetooth it always just worked once the phone was paired.

ODDLY by following my OWN advice (given to me by the ITS Mazda Folks) I now get text notifications! It tells me I have a message and I must turn the commander knob to the play icon for it to read it to me.

It works...kinda. I hope they get it to when it reads it with little Commander Knob play.

How to display texts while moving

Fun fact I just figured out about SMS reading. If the car is in motion, the infotainment system will not display the message. You have to have it read it to you.
If you enable the touchpad while in motion, it will display text just like when it is stopped. Enabling the touchpad while moving requires that you ssh into the system and disable /jci/scripts/set_speed_restriction_config.sh

Using an iPhone 4 with iOS 6, the system has been fairly inconsistent on picking up text messages. it works about 30% of the time lol. Yes when the car is in motion you cannot read the text on the screen. Long texts also do not display completely either.
Oddly my 5S with IOS7 works every time (so far). I just have to use the commander knob to hit the play button. I wish it would default to a play option so I did not have to look at the screen and toggle over to it.

Besides that, the only real complain is it reads the texts so damn fast. Its really hard to understand the clearest of texts when its reading faster than Joe Pesci in a Mobster Film!

The trick I used to get Text Messages to Display on Mazda 3

After 2 weeks of not being able to read TXT messages on my cars infotainment system, I finally got it working with a pretty simple solution. The short of it: I deleted all the messages in my phone's Messaging app, rebooted my phone, sent myself a single text message, and then resynced with the car (I also deleted all messages in my Hangouts app, but I don't think that was necessary)

My specific situation.

My car: a 2014 Mazda 3S GT running version 31.00.000 of the infotainment system OS
My phone: a Moto X running KitKat version 4.4.3.
My phone's apps and configuration for chatting and texting:

  • Messaging app used to receive and send txt messages.
  • Google Voice app also used to send and rcv text messages
  • Hangouts app only used for chatting with friends (I do not use it for texting now, although I briefly used it for that purpose many months back).
My Mazda would give me notifications that a text came in, but before the below fix I was never able to actually see those text messages on the car's screen (the car would endlessly display "updating" whenever I tried to download the text messages to the car).

Here's the exact set of steps I did to resolve that problem:

  • I deleted all the Messaging text messages in my phone
  • I deleted all the Hangout threads in my Moto X (both current messages and archived threads --- I don't think this was necessary as Hangouts isn't my default SMS app).
  • I did NOT touch my Google Voice at all (all of those text messages remain in my phone).
  • I then rebooted my phone.
  • I then sent a single text message to my cell phone from my wife's phone.

  • I then went out to the car and put it in accessory mode (stereo on mode).
  • It took a while for the car to sync all of my Contacts (no idea why it takes so long sometimes to resync the contacts).
  • Once it was done syncing I went to the text messaging screen of the Mazda's infotainment system and told it to update/download/sync the messages from my phone. It immediately updated, and the message from my wife's phone showed up as visible.
  • Then, while sitting in the car I sent a txt message from my wife's phone to my phone. The message popped up immediately on my infotainment screen, and I was then able to successfully send a canned response from the car back to my wife's phone.
I called the Mazda infotainment hotline at 1-800-430-0153 to suggest that they post this solution on the FAQ area of their website; hopefully that will be done. As an FYI, I think the problem with the Mazda is that it gets confused whenever there are any group texts / MMS texts in your phone.

Exact quote from our pals at Mazda Hands Free Tech Support on setting up the Iphone with the ITS for incoming texts.

"After your Iphone is paired to the system there is still one more setting that you have to change in the Iphone for the texting to work. In your phone you need to go to settings, bluetooth and then tap on the i next to Mazda. Turn on show notifications. After you turn that on, you may need to power your phone on and off again with the car turned off. After you do this you should now be able to use the text message function on the car to be notified and to recieve a text. At this point the Iphone is not able to send text or to use the email function."

As a followup, I have noticed that the Mazda Infotainment system occasionally stops seeing the content of my text messages, and then I have to go into my default Messaging App and delete all messages that are MMS (either a group text or a text with an attachment). It is not necessary to reboot the phone, but I have had to wait for the car to timeout on its initial sync before I could successfully force a resync to work.

What would be RAD would be to DISABLE that stupid "I agree" screen that hangs and hangs and hangs on boot up.

No matter how many times you hit the button to agree it still hangs and hangs!

JEESH! I AGREE ALREADY!

Now, jacking into the ssh...what happens when you do an update? Does the update reset this modification?

I have a 2015 Mazda3 GS Sport 5 door. My phone is an Iphone 4S ( OS 9.0.2 ) My infotainment center has no trouble with receiving the SMS messages. For safety it won't display them unless you are parked with the shift actually in P. It will however read them to you if you are driving.

My trouble is that I can't seem to get it to reply to them using those short responses.

Anyone know what I should do??

I have a 2015 3s Touring and my phone is running Android. When I first got the car and paired my phone with it I was able to receive text notifications and have it read to me while driving. But lately all I'll get is a notification that I got a text and from who. I clicked to see/read the text and the car tries to download the the messages it fails. It tries to connect but after a minute or two it says connections failed.
