2010 Mazda 3 2.0L i: Replacing AC clutch pulley, use puller?

Hi all,

I am in the middle of replacing the AC compressor clutch pulley assembly on my 2010 Mazda 3i LF 2.0 5 speed. Original compressor at 164K miles. Works fine. Will have an evacuation and recharge soon.

I have a new complete clutch assembly kit.
Everything is open and stretch belt off.

Do I have to use a 3-jaw puller to get the whole engine pulley-clutch assembly out? I’m thinking so as the new engine pulley has a new radial bearing with its inner race.

The outer facing clutch plate has an 8mm flange nut in the center. No real way to counter hold to remove the nut. Clutch plate spins

Do I want to remove the whole assembly with a puller and then separate stuff?

Or do I want to put the stretch belt back on, turn the engine to “on”, press ac switch to engage the coil-clutch to counter hold things and then break the nut?

Thanks -B

It was a good repair finally. I left it for a couple of weeks because of struggling with the larger inner snap ring holding in the magnetic coil. I bought some heavy duty OTC 4513 snap ring pliers, but I didn’t end up using them. It somehow came off with the channel locks and a screwdriver. I soldered the connections. It sounds great, and the ac is coolish. I’ll think about a recharge service at 165k miles. Nice to have it back.
