Special Thanks To Aminzer and Cain who provided 99% of this information to me.

This Information Pertains to Swapping from an '05 with a 5 speed G35M-R, to the speed3's A26M-R.
Your Parts May Vary.

Non-ABS cars and Automatics will not have a speedo if you do this swap. This is due to the fact that non-abs and automatic cars use a speed sensor on the transmission. Cars with ABS use the ABS sensors to drive the speedo.

This parts list pertains to my '05 MZ3S with the 5 Speed Manual, your parts may vary.

Transmission:
Stock - G35m-R

MS3 - A26m-R

Obviously Need The Transmission.
Stock Used Price - $400-$1000 depending on mileage
MS3 Used Price - $1000-1500 depending on mileage
I Bought One For $1281. From An '07 MS3, 40k Miles, 100 Day Parts Warranty.

Transmission Sensors:
Stock - Neutral + Reverse Switch (Optional Speed Sensor)

MS3 - Neutral + Reverse Switch

Sensors Are Compatible For All Manuals With ABS. Speedo Uses ABS Sensors.
If you have a manual car with ABS your speedo will still work, if not then you are SOL.

Re: How-To: Speed3 Trans Swap Into MZ3

no one know hows the ECU would react to the missing tranny. my assumption is that it will freak and not work. for this reason i recommend getting an MTX ECU and harness.

yes. i chose to replace the knuckle for my application. it is easier to swap the knuckle than to press the hubs out. hubs needed to be changed for 04-05
[/quote]

What about an mtx 08?, are these shafts and knuckles compatible with 6spd mtx or do I need to swap out like you had to?.....yeah I know I should do my on homework on this but I figured you probably already know the answer to this one...thanks.

#35 ·
afaik 06+ hubs are all the same. if you have a nut on the end instead of a bolt then they will fit. mine had bolts so i needed to change.

added 2 vids. more to come later. no real good places to get any due to traffic and having to hold the camera... will try to get another 40 roll and a launch vid soon.

What is your impression of the tranny swap in regards to acceleration compared to the 5mtx? No noticeable improvement? Moderate? Very noticeable?

I noticed in your 0-100 mph video that shifting ~7,100 rpm from 1st to 2nd you landed at ~5,000 rpm, whereas I land at ~4,500 rpm. From 2nd to 3rd I land ~5,000 rpm which seems to be the same as you.

Note: if ure car does not have (ABS) the ecu will go crazy and the car will not accelerate because it will go on a safe mode of sorts and will close the throttle body and will turn off the electric p/s pump... u will need to go to a standalone ecu to solve this problem and convert to a cable operated tb...

^ or just convert to the abs setup which is just a few components.

= find a abs ecu unit, wiring harness, wheel hubs, knuckles, abs sensors, program the ecu to work with ure' car, ect... = more $$$ than the standalone ecu

I actually have all the abs components sitting in my garage but haven't gotten around to converting my hatch. I got it all for less than 300. And afterwards, I'll still have a computer that works and throws cels if there is a problem, no cold start up issues, no tuning fees (300 bucks for a half fair tune), power steering, oem speedometer and gauges, and I'll have ABS. Standalone unit doesn't cost too much, but its all the tuning, and issues to deal with, plus for the same money you get no abs. But its good to know that people have more than one option now.

the change in the 1-2 shift is very noticeable. it's like night and day. no more bogging when you get to second. as you can see in the vid, you're in vvt in every gear.

someone made a graph of the ratios compared. cant find it though. but if you calculate them and look at them together you can see how they compare. the 6 speed every gear is even. with the 5 speed you have first, then a huge gap to second and then it's almost even.

#43 ·
also true. i usually use second to start at stop signs around the neighborhood where you don't really completely stop or w/e

So after about half a year of the parts sitting in my garage, finally jumped and got started. This is the second Saturday I have been working on it.

Just FYI, the bracket that connects the tranny to the mount underneath the battery tray (mount #4) is not interchangeable between a 5 and 6 speed. I got a rear engine mount bracket with my tranny but not the #4 bracket when I bought my transmission causing me to have to go buy one and delaying everything.

Been trying to put the MS3 tranny in today for about an hour. Man is it a pain in the neck. Didn't try angling the block like Verto wrote in his how-to but will probably need to next weekend when I have more time to work on this.

But man is it a tight fit. (Insert "That's what she said" comment here) But sedan or hatch, the extra 2" inches of space in the hatch engine compartment isn't where it would be any help, since you need it next to the LCA.

Would it be easier dropping the tranny and engine into the bay together?
....granted not everybody is going to be able to do this at home or are in the same situation that I' am in.

- but I just had the engine built and so everything is out of the bay....they left me a message today, I didn't get home from work until 1a.m. so I have to wait until tomorrow to find out whaty exactly the issue is/ pretty brief message- they said they ran into a problem with the lower mount that mounts to the tranny, I sourced every part on the op's list sans all I can think of is maybe the bolts for this mount...are they the same or different.

got:
*transmission/used 22k miles- 1 year warranty
*seals-new
*driver's side cv/used
*passenger's side cv/used
*slip shaft/used
*linkage cables-new
*linkage bracket-new
*clutch/pressure plate/flywheel/throwout bearing-new
*top mount bracket w/bolts-new
*lower mount bracket-new
*shifter assembly-new
*slave cylinder/hardline

most of these parts are new, and I verified that they were all 100% correct via the shop manual

FUCK-What did I miss?

Man this is frustrating....if I had time I would do this myself but instead all I have is money because I spend all of my time at work try to do a project like this when you work pretty much straight 12-16 hour days 7 days a week with 4 days off a month- lol!?

The 3 bolt bracket for the bottom mount that goes into the tranny isn't compatible I had to buy a new one from mazda $30

I found this picture, the part they are having issues with is on the left, it is a different design for the bigger 6speed tranny but still puts the mount in the same location.

AS for installing everything The best way I found to do everything is to actually lift the car up and raise the engine and tranny together inside the bay and bolt it in. Do not have the accessories attached, no engine harness attached, keep the intake manifold off ect. By doing it this way you can also route all the hardlines first such as coolant, clutch lines, shifter cables, ect. before installing the harness. This makes for a very easy and nice installation. Also this way prevents things from getting damaged due to the size of the engine+tranny it really can be a pain to get everything in and aligned especially with things attached. The frist time I put my engine in I had everything attached including the turbo manifold, and intake mani along with the engine harness, that was a nightmare.

I took this picture right after putting my engine and tranny back in.

I' am going to have to head out to my shop and see what is going on firsthand...first I got a message about a rear mount and today I got an email implying the hubs are incompatible.
Okay my car is a 2008 s touring that came with a 5spd mt, the shaft's used a nut instead of a bolt to secure the shaft to the hub.....according to my shop they say my hubs are incompatible....were as verto clearly states my hubs and the shafts should be compatible.....I asked this question almost a year ago and I confirmed that there is a nut not a bolt securing this shaft on my car...so which is it?

Thanks Logan for posting those brackets...yeah exactly the same

#48 ·
Meh nvm, I just got off the phone with my shop, they said that they just wanted to confirm the shaft/hub compatibility-they did have to enlongate the clutch line a couple of inches.....in about 4 hours they'll have it on th dyno....hopefully tomorrow I'll be taking it home to finish the break in.

I think I have the short shifter covered lol

I went with a complete ACT clutch package, 6 puck sprung-pressure plate-flywheel- it should be up to the job of holding a measely 350whp
