Re: How-to Guide : FRONT and REAR Rotor & Brake Pad install/replacement

In my case I just replaced the rotors and reused the stock pads. Since rotors aren't that much of a wear item, I didn't have to compress the piston and open bleeder valves. The caliper was gently worked free, outboard pad removed (inboard brake pad is clipped onto the caliper piston), caliper mount removed, rotors swapped, caliper mount reinstalled, pad replaced, and caliper gently worked back on. Simple enough? :)

correct me if I'm wrong, but you don't need to open the bleeder valves to compress the pistons to install brake pads, at least that was my understanding. I hope I'm not wrong, cuz I've done several brake jobs on past vehicles without opening the bleeder valves to compress the piston. . .

Nope you don't have to open the bleeder valves. You can open up the cap to the brake fluid reservoir, taking note to remove some fluid beforehand to prevent it from spilling over , and compress the pistons.

Whenever I work on swapping brake pads, I usually open the valves to flush/drain & replace the fluid in the respective lines.

what if the piston will not open as wide as i need to silde caliper back on. I had a really hard time getting it off in the first place

Re: How-to Guide: Rotor, Brake Pad, and BrakeLine install/replacement (FRONT / R

Augmented this post w/ a short how-to/walkthrough on installing Techna-fit SS Braided brake lines. I only had time to do the front lines, but will finish up the rear install at a later date. Generally not a hard install and it is really straightforward, it took me about 10-15mins per side to swap out the lines. Nonetheless, the guided walkthrough will point out the wrench sizes you need to carry out the stock line removal and the installation of the new lines. Hopefully it'll help. :)

Ah, I see. Thanks. Now, why didn't you get drilled & slotted? I went to an aftermarket auto parts store yesterday and when I told them I just wanted slotted rotors, they asked: Why? You are defeating the purpose of the type of rotor because they need to be cooled down.. etc. etc.

Any other explanation?

slotted/drilled brakes are pretty much just bling for anything but track use. Our brakes have very few issues with fade, especially on the street, so you might as well save the money and buy plain rotors unless you like the look.

I like the look of the slotted rotors, that's why I asked the guy at the store for a quote on them. I will check out ptuning...

edit - PTuning lists those rotors as "S" rotors.. :( Aren't they the same??

sok - Have you had any problems with your rotors or anything yet?

no, the S and I have different brakes, at least I know they do up front, the rears might be the same

Hmm, if I get the rotors for the "s" and they fit the rears only, I don't think I'll try it because when it comes time for me to get fronts.. they wont fit. Why didn't they just put the same brake system in?

the S has larger diameter front brakes, some of the biggest in the compact car class, which is responsible for its best in class stopping distance. Definitely buy the right brake rotors for your car
