I took a trip with my GF and some buddies to Pismo Beach this weekend and decided to go ahead and take my 3 onto the sand. I got more looks and turned more heads than anyone there in their lifted $55,000 4x4s. The bad thing is that my camera was dead and I was only able to score one pic before it died all together. I even had to cross a small stream the ran directly into the ocean. All I gotta say is I was sweating bullets crossing it with my CAI. What I did was cover it with a dry T-shirt build up some speed then dropped it into neutral and coasted across. Made it just fine, but I will deff not try that ever again LOL. Here is my picture out on the beach in the sand.

Lol. No - I was driving along 101 north in the Santa Barbara area and saw a silver sedan pass me. Had two people in it with tinted windows.

Just wanna say make sure you take it to the car wash with some ramps and get under it to spray out all that sand.

The white thing in my exhaust pipe is a T-shirt. Just there to keep the sand out while overnight.

Yeah I did all that this morning on my way out. Since I had aired out my tires for the sand I just took care of it all at the car wash.

Why??

The fact that you drove it around in sand should be included with VIN information on that car. I wouldn't want to ever buy a car that was driven around in sand.

so do you drive your car or do you just wash it every now and then and just keep it in the garage....

Well, I drove a used Tacoma for ten years that had scratched up windows, where the previous owner drove it in the sand, got sand in the window area, rolled the windows up and down, and put long scratches all over the windows. And Tacomas are made to be driven in sand and mud. No telling what sand can damage in a front wheel drive car.

I mean. I really don't know jack about cars. So, when I say that bit about VIN information, I'm not entirely serious. If I were on a committee which decided on such a thing, I would ask for more information before making a decision, but I wouldn't be on such a committee in the first place, because I don't know crap about cars.

Driving a street car in sand seems dumb to me, but I don't know for sure that it is dumb. :)

I still would be very hesitant about buying a street car that was driven in sand.

How the hell did you manage to drive on the looser sand away from the beach in a FWD car? I have a helluva time driving my 2WD F150 on the beach after post marker 2 (south of Arroyo Creek) because all the quads and motorcycles with paddles tear the sand up, making it really loose and choppy.

because he wanted to? lol...

as far as the VIN number rant... if you care so much about those things then buy the car new. that's exactly why i don't buy used cars (not that I'm saying its a horrible thing).

Well to answer you driving in sand is just like driving in snow. I used to live in upstate NY when I was in the army. All the guys used to call me the snow plow cause my car would do so well. The fact is that a front wheel car will do better in poor grip situations than a rear wheel since most of the weight of the car is on top of the driving force. And the fact that I dropped my air pressure to about 15psi helped. You would do allot better with your truck if you just put some sand bags in the bed to weight it down. And your right about the quads with paddle tearing up the sand and making it really bumpy. It's all bout momentum. Once you get going you can't stop or it quits.

lol ... um if SAND caused any decrease of value or messed up the car .. I think Mazda would need to be put out of their misery .. I thought cars were meant for driving.. seems to me driving it in the nasty rain/snow/icy weather would be worse then taking it for a little drive on the beach. Not being sarcastic but it's saaannnddd.
