What It Looks Like When The Battery Dies

2809 Views 27 Replies 15 Participants Last post by  agm_ultimatex
So I'm on my way home from work and stop to get gas. I fill up, get back into my car and it won't turn on! I'm turning the key and it won't start and everything flashes and once I stop turning the key the needles go all the way up and then back down... So I call my mom who luckily was on her way home as well and a few miles away and we called a tow truck.

Here's a video of what my car was doing:

We should find out tomorrow what's wrong with it...

Edit: So turns out it was the battery that died....LOL. When we went to pick it up tonight, the guy was like it still had the original battery in there! And I was like ya...it was 5 years old...lol.

Anyways, for future reference for everybody, this is what our cars do when the battery goes...

Re: Car Stopped Working...

Wow, what a freak thing to happen of all places. I guess a jump start did not work huh ?

Mine did that when the battery died.

Hope it all works out.
Re: Car Stopped Working...

We didn't even try a jump start... Mom didn't think it was the battery and the tow truck guy said it sounds like it's the alternator.
Re: Car Stopped Working...

looks like your car has become possesed!

I have no idea whats causing it but yeah def electrical. Just wierd that out of nowhere it started doing it.
Lucky for it to happen where you did, not stranded somewhere bad.
Re: Car Stopped Working...

Hmmmm weird. Good luck finding out what it is!

Love the yellow hatch btw :) Was '04 the only year for it?
Re: Car Stopped Working...

Thanks! And ya, '04 was the only year...
Re: Car Stopped Working...

i wish i had a yellow :p and im thinking alternator.
Re: Car Stopped Working...

I doubt it's the alternator - unless there's something in the computer that won't let the car start when the alternator is bad. Most cars will still start even if the alt is going bad - at least until the battery is dead. Dash looked nice and bright, battery was probably charged, meaning the alternator is working.

I'm curious to know what caused this. All I can think is computer... especially with the dash freakout.

Re: Car Stopped Working...

Nah, thats a battery issue for sure. Either loose / corroded cables or a dead cell. Might have enough juice to run lights and what not, but not enough to turn the starter over.

Been there done that.
Re: Car Stopped Working...

+1, battery, I've had alternator issues in my old Mazdas.
Re: Car Stopped Working...

hmmm, i said battery first but roxane said i was wrong :(
Re: Car Stopped Working...

I mean my mom was like that's not the battery.... And the tow guy checked it out and was like it's the alternator....
Re: Car Stopped Working...

So a bad battery causes the dash to go apeshit? I'll have to remember that in case it happens to me.

Re: Car Stopped Working...

yeah, when my battery died in my speed... the dash did what hers did.
Re: Car Stopped Working...

yea see if it was the alternator, there wouldn't be juice at all or very little and dieing rappidly
Re: Car Stopped Working...

i've seen that when the battery cable was just loose. not on my car, or course.

Oh yeah, my old 3 was sitting for the better part of 2 months when I rebuilt the motor and when I dropped it back in and went to start it, I was greeted with that.

Yeah, it does that on my 08.5 as well. Three weeks without driving anywhere plus messing around with the headlights/foglights/parking lights (was working on the indy fog mod) equals low battery and dash freaking out when you go to try and start it. Now whenever I let the car sit, I charge the battery with a 600mA trickle charger for 24 hours once a week.
My original battery lasted 3 years.

I now have a Duralast Gold with 900 cranking amps + Lifetime warranty and free replacenent.

I luvs Autozone
