how much power do you need to do it consistantly? I've never taken my car (or any car for that matter) to the strip. For all I know maybe I just need to drive what I've got well. Just wondering what it will take to run vette times in my lil silver mazda :)

also, anyone breaking gears out on the strip? how badly do you need new gears over 300whp?

Money, patience, and gears... lol

more than just power mods, suspension helps put down the power to the ground.

you'll definitely need new gears or a transmission for 300whp unless you dont go over 4000rpm.

no way will our tranny hold that kind of power for long

I kinda wish I had the old setup dyno'd. Mr. Tea had offered to include me in one of his dyno days, but we never really talked to much about it, and then I had a bunch of stuff happen with my car anyways. I wonder how much life I've already sucked out of my tranny.

When the new kit is in I'll have to hit either him or Chris up about getting a dyno done.

what whp are you at now? you're not going to do it without slicks. that's a must. i'd get a set of skinnies too. the less weight you're dragging, the better. if you dont have springs, get some. the less squating your car does, the less weight transfer and the more power you can keep on the front wheels. an lsd will make a difference in a low 13 and a high 12.

the only other thing is skill. don't expect to run an outstanding time the first time out. launching and shifting makes a huge difference between 2 drivers. if you can get a >2.0s 60', you'll be well on your way to a quick time.

Hey Sleeping, maybe put on a modest nitrous kit and you can probably get into the 13s. :) haha

Is this really hard? I know I havn't tried to run a quarter yet, but I'd be pissed if I go out to the track and can't manage anything under 14, I mean I've got a turbo and y rated tires for cryin out loud, how much more does it take?

you aren't going to hit it with street tires. trust me. street tires don't hook up on a prepped track. you'll be lucky to get a 2.25s 60'.

take whatever you think you know about racing on a dragstrip and throw it out the window. don't be suprised if you DO run a 14s pass the first couple of times especially with street tires.

don't forget to deflate the tires to around 22-25psi. running on street pressure is going to do nothing but wheel hop.

i wish i could be there for your first run. the look on your face will be classic!!

that sucks. Can I get slicks that will fit the stock rims?

Maybe I should just get some new wheels too. guess I'll have to start watering the money tree some more...

we use 15" steelies and stick slicks on. hitting 12s on my rx8 wheels and tires isnt far fetched. If i am actualy going to try it is another thing. What ecu and components of teh ecu are you running jonny...do not attempt to do over like 280whp on stock gears...especially with the turbo you run (gt28?) because it spools way too fast...plus if you are running the regular 28r then i doubt you'll get much over 300 whp efficiently..it just doesnt flow enough air at good temps...that turbo is going to make it very tough to get solid 12s...its possible im sure but u'd need full standalone and more in my opinion. i know that we are aiming for 10seconds on slicks soon and my goal is eventually low 12's or high 11s on my street wheels...i know xenon is gonna beat me to it though :)

mean the same power in a lighter fwd car should go the same times. [/quote]
that's not entirely accurate.

Granted, FWD has no place at a drag strip, 12's should be pretty easy with >285whp.

rrrrrright. don't be a jackass. and hitting 12s in anything that runs 15's stock is easier said than done.

if people are so hellbent on running quick times at a dragstrip why use fwd? It does not belong in a dragstrip, plain and simple. Yea, it's a fun challenge trying to make a little 4 cylinder car run quick, but it's ignorance to deny the fact that if you really just want to go FAST you would build a light rwd car with a good suspension setup. I didn't say i don't support running fwd cars at the track, i said they really have no place there. I'm not the one being the jackass here, bud. and as far as a lighter car going the same time with the same power, that sure as hell better be accurate. If you can't get a 3100lb car with 285whp to run high 12's... SOMEBODY can, plain and simple.

Im confused then. If I had known I was going to be doing something like this ya i would have bought a RWD but i love my 3....you were saying a fwd car has no place at the drag strip but i disagree. With proper components such as suspension work and engine mounts and torque dampeners and LSD I think we do well at the track.

maybe i did go a little overboard by saying they have no place, but very rarely do i see one that does well. I honestly feel like they should have separate days for fwd and rwd. Nothing is worse than doing a burnout on a set of $400 slicks only to find out you rolled through water that the rear tires of a fwd car tracked in front of you. I understand most people buy the car at first because it's a nice car, then they do an intake, then exhaust, and you always want more until you end up where you are at, shooting for 10's. I respect that entirely. What i don't understand is the people that have 20k(or more, or less, just example) to spend on a car, they want to go really fast, so they buy a civic si, or an s2000, or a sentra. If they REALLY wanted to go fast, why not either buy a car for 20k thats already fast, or buy a car for 6k and put the rest into it? Why buy a car that's painfully slow to begin with when your soul intention is to go fast?

People like you, are different. You clearly want your car to perform, you want the rush of high horsepower. What i don't get is these people with a body kit, huge wing, intake, exhaust, and the "i can beat anyone" attitude, when they clearly couldn't run a 17 down hill with a tail wind. It's almost as if they are scared to go fast but don't want anyone to know it lol.

My uncle races Pro Mod funny bike, and I practically grew up at a dragstrip. So race gas, tube frames, and big slicks have always been in my blood. There is nothing like the feeling of pulling the front wheels off the ground, especially at an intersection. I respect anyone who truly wants to go fast with their car, not just say "i have an 1800hp supra!" that runs 11's on a good day because the asshole who built it builds car with the theory "bigger is better." I'm sure we all know (well those who actually KNOW, not read in some tuner magazine) that bigger is better couldn't be further from the truth when it comes to forced induction.
