Now for the actual question... I remember back in the street racing days kids with these honda civics that were able to change the RPM range the V-TEC kicked in at. Im asure you know where this is going.. Is there a way to change where the VVT kicks in? I am going to do the timing advance mod because i dont see any hard in it (especually saying its free) and i wanted to have some way to kick the VVT in a little earlier. i can really feel when it kicks in and think it would REALLY help in the acceleration dept to have it earlier. Are there scan tools that do this or am only dreamin? :klavergreg: Thanx for the help guys..

Learn a little more about vtec and vvt
http://www.mazda3forums.com/index.php?topic=58821.0
some of the best info is not on the first page so please read

VCTS is the tumbler.... that helps VVT happen quicker?

To my understanding VVT is a more progressive change as VTEC is a drastic cam changethat happens later and for a little bit but that is actually noticable at a certain point (5200-5500rpm depending what motor)

I backprobed the vvt solenoid with my lab scope and noticed it was more of an ON-OFF event entirely dependant on throttle position, with 75% or more throttle triggering the cam shift. It didn't care where the rpm was or what speed, just where my right foot was. I'll post a graph showing the event and the shift in the cam/crank angle.

VVT doesn't "kick in". It is variable valve (cam) timing with a range of about 30 degrees.
It is not the same as VTEC (although i-VTEC also incorporates variable valve timing).

2.0 doesnt have VVT to my knowledge, its a different (older) technology

2.0 is good for boosting i hear though... :)

I keep hearing envy of the people who have 2.0 in the FI Forum.

To my knowledge v-tech is just a name brand of the technology, and all engines these days have some form of the same technology, just maybe not to that exact level.

people are praising the 2.0 for boosting, not for it's non-vvt (1st 2 years at least) feature, but the shorter stroke. much safer to push that setup than it is to push that on the 2.3.

and if anyone in SoCal wants to play in the next week (might be to late) and is willing to pay a little to get some VVT control. i got a guy that works for PE (don't know if this or next is his last week) that said they'll see if their CamCon box would work on our car. let me know

The main difference (and advantage) that honda's VTEC system has is that its variable valve timing and LIFT...not just timing. when the VTEC "kicks in" in a honda/acura, you are switching from an economical, smooth, low rpm camshaft profile to a lumpy, high overlap, high lift, high rpm cam profile. you you get the smoothness and economy of a detuned engine, with the high power of a tuned, powerful engine. it is the BEST variable valve timing system out there, PERIOD. and in case anyone was wondering, VTEC hit the market in 1984 for their motorcycles. so its NOT new technology at all, everyone else is just now catching up with Honda in the past 5-8 years.

and its VTEC....V-Tech makes ugly cordless phones. :klavergreg:
