Say you've got $100-ish to spend on upgrading speakers. What do you do?

My wife doesn't want me spending a lot of money on buying new speakers. I think the front components sound decent, but the back speakers sound pretty bad. (I have a Pioneer DEH-P3600 driving them, and 2 10" MTX subs @ 400RMS as well, if it matters.)

So what would you recommend? I could spend $100 on some decent components for the front, and turn the back speakers off completely. Or, I could upgrade the truly terrible back speakers, since the fronts sound OK. OR, I could get cheaper speakers and do the whole car...

I just installed a pair of CDT-61a's (with TW-24 tweeter) in the front and the sound quality improvement is really nice. I'm just running the HU amp, but they still sound good. They are really detailed. Note that they do sound pretty bad the first few hours, but over time the woofer suspension loosens up and they start to sing. I think they will get even better as I only have about 12 hours on them right now. Anyhow, they were $99/pair. I ordered the CDT-S60A from www.woofersetc.com and they send the CL-61a as a free upgrade. To tell you the truth, I think it's the same thing..... Don't waste your money upgrading the rears to anything great.....They mess up the front imaging anyhow.

Another option that is that there are some really good CDT deals at premier audio. The EF-61s are nice for this kinda dough. I probably would have got these if I didn't buy the others first....

I'd honestly say, if you only have $100, don't even bother with speakers at all.
Wait until you've got the money for quality equipment.
Of course, this is just me, and the way I do things with my cars.

BTW, the front and rear, full range, wizzer cone speakers are identical. The only difference is a little, low efficiency, Audax tweeter crossed over at a very high frequency. Not exactly high fidelity.

I would upgrade the fonts and keep the stock in the back. That's what i did on my sunfire and it sounds good. The backs are just for full so you won't really notice to much of a difference after upgradeing them. Unless you ride in the back seat a lot i'd do just the front.

I tried very hard to keep my upgrade less than $100, but I ended up spending quite a bit more - about $250 - for some Focal 165A speakers. Everything less expensive sounded bad, without much bass, and rather inarticulate.

I have not heard the CDT speakers mentioned here, however, so they could be OK for the money. You really need to go somewhere you can listen to speakers, because brand name and/or popularity has a poor corellaton with actual sound quality.

There you go - quality component speakers for under $150.

I looked at these.....They may be too deep for the fronts as they are 2.95" deep.

BTW, the top of the line eD 6500 is essentially a HD series CDT and the older ed6000 was essentially a CL series CDT. The speakers and crossovers look to be identical.

I spent about $250 to upgrade both the front and rear speakers. I went with Infinity Reference 5.25" components up front (about $150) and Reference 6x8 coaxials in the rear ($100). Much better than the stock paper pieces of crap they install, and they even work just fine with the factory headunit -- your Pioneer should have no problem.
