I'm getting such bad gas mileage on my 2006 5dr GT (MT) - 16-19mpg, that I'm seriously trading it in for a 2007 VW 4dr GTI. Has anyone else considered or done this?
I love everything else about the car, but I just can't get over the disappointing economy; which is the main reason I purchased the car.

Dude seriously there is somethin wrong. I had the same car and regularly got 27 - 28 mpg (32 - 33 on trips with cruise).
Are you riding the brake or somethin ? Check your tire pressure. Take it to another mechanic, have him check your a/f ratio.

I never got below 24 in my 2006 5dr GT (MT) even when I was romping on it.

Heck, I'm getting 26 mpg in my Mazdaspeed3 when i don't romp on it too much.

The 2006 5 door 2.3 is rated 26/32 if I read it right so 19 is too low and is mostly likely indicative of a serious problem. Probably a fuel leak? Do you smell gas or notice any power problems or irregular idle? I agree, you should have the dealer or a competent mechanic check out your car.

You must be driving mostly highway then. The best I can manage in the city is 21 mpg (which still isn't bad for this car at all) with about 24-26 on the highway if I keep the revs low.

Yeah I don't even get that bad mileage on my MS3. Heck the lowest I have gotten so far is 24mpg and that is when I was having a bit of fun with it.

On my MS3... No combined driving, but there is more highway than city for me.

Original poster here...

I do drive about 90% in the city. However, I do NOT stomp on the gas. I drive from easy to moderate. Minimal spirited driving. During my 5k mile service, I asked the Service manager to take a look at the problem, but he gave me some BS about having to replicate the problem before he could even beging to resolve the issue.

Typically, I get 240 miles per tank. I would expect at least 275 miles per fill up. So, I don't know what's going on. I just want a vehicle that gets me good economy.

The GTI seems to have a good mix of fun, economy, and 'luxury'.

Any other suggestions???

See i sit in traffic for 1.5hours to 2.0 hours per day 5 days a week
And i deal with backroads near my home which = spirited driving

I always got around 300 miles per tank sometimes 310,320,330 etc...

Calcuate how many miles driven divided by how many gallons pumped in
The gas light doesnt come on at the same time every time, nor does the time ran to the gas station

I pump in 10 gallons exactly and calculate it that way. I wait for the needle to hit E though. I consistently get between 200-210 miles in the city.

To the original poster: It's probably a good idea to visit the VW forums (if you haven't done so already) to prepare yourself for what you might face in reality in terms of fuel economy. Also you might discover some other surprises you hadn't planned for.

i thought i was having the same problem on my car, but it turns out that my gas tank is shrinking.....

i used to try and fill up when my gas light came on everynow and then and would get about 13 gallons into the car. this is with mostly city driving, and occasional highway driving(which means 90mph). i'd get like 350. to a FULL tank.

the other day i filled up, my gas light had been on for roughly 15miles, and when i filled up i filled up with 11 gallons at 300miles.

i have the same car as you with a few mods. idk why you would be getting 16-19mpg. thats just weak. somethign is wrong, unless you have a PZEV engine.

On an ms3 (mazdaspeed 3)? That's hard to believe. Are you using the trip computer? I heard it can be off my good amount sometimes.

My bad. I was thinking he was referenciing his MZ3.

If you can get 26 on the MS3, that'd be amazing.

To calculate mpg, you must fill the tank then reset the trip meter. Drive until you get low on gas. Fill the tank again. Take how many gallons it takes to fill back up and divide by the amount of miles driven on your trip meter. Now reset the trip meter and do it all again...

That is the only way to accurately calculate mpg. You can't go by where the gas needle is because it is not accurate. When it is exactly at the 1/2 mark you do not really have 7.25 gallons left (14.5 gallon tank).

Some of my experience:

177.6 mi / 8.904 gal = 19.95 mpg
222.4 mi / 11.550 gal = 19.26 mpg
201.5 mi / 10.052 gal = 20.05 mpg

My miles are a majority of highway miles and the 'city' portion is more rural roads than stop and go city. For this reason I am trading my 3 5AT for a 3 5MT (also because I miss 5MT and I think there may be further problems with the vehicle that service can't find). According to my calculations, if I can achieve an extra 5 mpg for a total of ~ 25 mpg, I would recoup the extra $1,000 down needed in about 50,000 miles if gas stays at $2.20 / gal. I will drive over 50,000 miles in the car, so for me it is worth it.

Getting a GTI is not going to save you money. You are going to take a hit on the trade in plus the extra cost of the GTI. I am only taking a $1,000 hit on my trade because the dealership is working hard to help me out. You are probably talking at least a loss of $3,000 or more when going to the GTI. It would take an awful lot of miles to make that up. My friend gets about 26 mpg in his GTI so if my numbers are right, and you get 26 mpg too, it would take you ~150,000 miles to make up a $3,000 loss in trading up to the GTI. Also, the GTI will require premium so there's more money.

Also think of insurance. I looked at a GTI while shopping for a new car. Insurance on the 3 for 6 months is ~$500 for me, or $1,000 a year. The GTI would cost 3 times as much, ~$1,500 for 6 months, $3,000 a year. If those numbers were true for you, it would be a difference of $2,000 a year, no way you could make that up in gas saved.

If you are looking at speed, a manual GTI does 0-60 in about 6.6 seconds from most sources, the Mazda 3 does it in 7.4 seconds (from MT IIRC), so a 0.8 second difference with equal drivers. Of course, the faster you go, the further away the GTI pulls. Thats why you get a MS3 :D. Discounting straight line sprints, I would think a manual 3 would hang pretty close with a GTI on a course with turns :).

I can understand wanting a GTI, they are good cars and practical with the 5 door configuration. If you really want a GTI, I would wait until at you at least have had your 3 for 3 years and try to get as much paid off as possible, then trade it in when you have positive equity in the car (it is worth more than you owe). It is inconceivable that you could save enough money in gas by trading in on a GTI to be ahead.

Sorry for the rambling post...
