"Trade In" Experiences

:) Hello,

Just curious as to how all of you who traded in a car when purchasing your M3 felt about the experience. Was there much haggling? Did you get what you expected? What did you trade? How much did you get?

Thanks!

Never trade-in if you own a Japanese car - they sell quickly.

If you don't... tough call
Yup yup.

I have never seen a trade-in deal that offered a competitive value in combination with a good price on the new car.

I sold my old car ('92 Accord) to CarMax for full KBB trade-in value ($1700). Could have gotten a few hundred dollars more if I sold it privately, but the expenses and hassles were not worth it to me personally.
If you trade in your old car for a new car, they will deduct the trade in value on the new car before they add the tax. In the other hand, you are saving some tax and some work on selling the car on your own. In your case, you live in toronto... if you trade in a car for $1000, you will save $150 tax....trade in for $10000 you will save $1500 tax....etc
But what I can get privately can easily beat this deal.

I can sell my Maxi for $2500-3000 or the dealer can give me $1500-1700 tops.

When I bought the PRO they wanted to give me less than $4000 for my Civic that I sold for $6000 in less than a week with a Star ad.

In a large city where imports are preferred, selling privately is the way to go - it all depends on the market.
Traded in an '01 Nissan Frontier. Dealer gave me $14k when it only booked at around $11k :D
Again, it depends on your area (supply/demand)
I traded in my 12 yr old 626. They gave me 500$ for it, which was pretty good-we went several places and that was the most offered. Guess I should have donated it to charity and -taken the tax deduction but I wasn't thinking about it.

I live 10 minutes from where Frontiers are made, no huge demand here, or anywhere else for that matter, and obviously plenty of supply. :D
THANKS!!! ONE QUESTION....

Thanks for all the help! I have a 93Civic Si Hatch (Orig owner) with aftermarket Rims, 235K, I just paid $1600 to fix both quarter panels (remove rust, new metal, re-paint) after my neighbour backed into her (he paid $1100 of the cost), she's also got new tires (Yes I know... "her" ... had her 10 years, she'll be missed) Anyway, a dealer I spoke with offered $3K... Am I dreaming when I think I can get $5K in a private sales ... Thanks for your opinions!!!!
Blah, they wanted $2000 for my 97 Acura 2.2 CL with 97,000mi.

I sold it privately for $5300.

93 Si, 235K. If the brakes/tires/CV boots/rad/gasket/muffler looks good, I'd want $3500-4000.

Hold on to it and the deals will come - but NOT from a dealer. Try autotrader.ca to see what similar cars go for.

Thanks for the input dinu01, the only question mark would be the rad, brakes, tires, & muffler were all replaced within the last 6 months.... I guess I was hoping for more as I've seen lots of Pre 90 Civics selling in the trader for $3K :(
If they're new that's better - now with new parts in the car you can expect $4000-4500 after haggling. My main worry w/Civics of that age is the head gasket, but you're selling not buying:)

Your other advantage is that it's an Si. Also how the A/C works will affect your car's desirability on the market. I bet it's as good as new now:)
don't trade in at the dealer you're buying your car from... try other dealers or car buying establishments... once you've found one, talk to your dealer and see if they will do an "in and out" services... this way, you get to look for more bids on your car and still get tax breaks... an even better way is to find a private buyer and do the same "in and out" services with your dealer... you get the benefit of selling the car at closer to retail plus get the tax benefits.. i almost did this but my buyer couldn't commit in the end. usually, the service will cost somewhere around $100 - 300... which is nothing compared to all the benefits..
When I bought my 3 hatchback, the salesman initially raved about my 1996 Saturn SL1, but the evil old used-car guy on the lot (who I never saw, of course) turned his nose up at it and offered $750, which they later grudingly bumped up to $1000. Edmunds and Kelly said to expect around $2300-$2400 from a dealer, so I decided not to trade in. With a time investment of about five hours, I sold the car--to the first folks who showed up--for $3250.
