So I have a few questions on subs for a 3 hatchback.

I am aiming to put in an 8" sub to add to the stock 6-speaker. I was also trying to do this without compromising any of the room in the hatchback or making any drastic changes to the interior (ie. cutting anything out). And i'm also limited on how much money i can invest in this. Aiming to be less than $150 if at all possible.

1: Should I look at bass tubes instead? I'm tempted by a Bazooka (model is the EL8A). I don't really want to have to pay for an amp so would this be a good bet?

2: If not the bass tube, then what subwoofers should i look at? I have been tempted by an 8" Rockford Fosgate as well, but I don't want to have to pay for the amp to power it.

3: How exactly should I get the thing into my car? Where should I put it without having to modify my car's interior too much. A tube would be easier I think than an actual sub w/ enclosure, but I am still unsure

4: Can i put in an on/off switch to control the sub?

In case anyone hadn't noticed, I know only a little about car audio...

And also...2 ohm, 4 ohm, 8 ohm? How do I determine what I need.

Thanks everyone!

im nooby too! amps are expensive.
But you can fit amps and subwoofers under your seats. Bose sound systems that come stock on some mazda3s has their sub/amp under the driver/passenger seat.

a thin subwoofer is the SQ10 from www.elementaldesigns.com for 55 dollars and i think free shipping, but then an amp will cost about 150+. and you still need a wiring kit/box...

i heard bazooka tubes really dont help in our cars, or the sedans at least.

think ur gunna need to up ur budget a lil bit unless u have an amp and wiring kit already. then u can find a decent sub for that but finding a whole system for 150 i really wouldnt waste the time. You get what you pay for just remember that.

Your budget is pretty close to the why bother amount. You have to spend at least $300 to get a sub worth putting in. I have a used tube sub that I used to have in my Ford Focus. I'll sell it for $70 (I paid twice that). It works OK, but it just fills out the bottom end a bit, doesn't really "sub" woof.

(This is an 6" Bazooka sub, btw). I doubt that the 8" is much better.

a) Sound deadening + a decent set of components + amp
b) Stealth Box, search + amp + sub + wiring
c) Be a man, sacrafice some space, and go alittle more conventional style box + sub + amp + wiring

Each of these will almost end up in the same price range, but with the comps you get the benefit of getting clearer all around sound.

I got a laugh out of that one.

okay...
wow

thanks for the responses...
after looking at stuff, if i can remove the stuff easily then it shouldn't be a problem.

it's still the price that gets me. I'm really only looking for the most basic bit of thump to fill in the lower ranges...for a stock system the standard 6-speaker has a good bit of thump to it. I was just hoping to be able to give it a little bit more. But if $150 puts me in the 'why bother' area, then i guess 'why bother?'

the budget isn't really something i can change too much now...
high school student and all...

(okay go ahead crack the jokes...spoiled kid with a new mazda)

well i usually catch hell from people because my parents bought the car for me. somehow it makes me an inferior person.

and i suppose that i will just wait around and invest in something more substantial. If i can use the same setup using quick release wires and the velcro box, then i won't have to worry about the space. I like that setup a lot. kudos.

thanks again everyone!

Ok, so these guys are telling you you're in the "why bother?" range. Well, yes and no.

For a decent amount of thump (not blow you brains, smash your windows amount) you can get an eD and a used amp (decent brand mind you).

http://www.edesignaudio.com/edv2/product_info.php?cPath=21&products_id=106 - SQ10 $55
http://www.edesignaudio.com/edv2/product_info.php?cPath=92&products_id=183 - EHQS12 $25
Now, the EHQS12 isn't a "powerful" subwoofer, but it is better than the Bazooka, that's for sure. And it is a "Home theater subwoofer", but it works just fine for me. Either one of these subs can be purchased in 2 or 4ohms.

As for an amp look at this eBay search : http://search.ebay.com/search/searc...=compare&copagenum=1&coentrypage=search&fgtp=
Almost everything on that page'll do what you need it to. Get something that puts out ~250W RMS in 2 or 4ohms, depending on which sub you get.

As for the box, go pick up a box from wally world, if you're not comfortable building your own MDF box.

Wiring, well you can go the DIY way (buy the wires and a fuse insert cheap from somewhere like Lowes) or goto Wally World for the Schosche wiring kit. Also, if the amp doesn't have a built-in Line Out Converter, you'll need to get one. Once again, Wally World has a cheap (not bad, not good) Schosche LOC. You can have it all for less than $150.

Here's my price list on my setup, so far:
eD - EHQS12 (2ohm) - $35 w/ S&H
eBay - Crossfire CFA300M - $75 w/ S&H
Wal-Mart - Wiring Kit - $20
--------------------------------------
$130

Now, if I want to add the cost of what a MDF box would have cost, I would have ended up around $150.

But I wanted a space saving, semi-unique box, so it's in my pass. side wheel well (in the trunk). So fiberglass resin, matte, tape, tinfoil, and misc supplies have added up to ~$75-100 so far, more resin'll bring me to ~$150.

Also, w/ an MDF box you can upgrade your sub later on if you so choose.

Just some things to consider/

could try just amping the stock system like i did (i have bose) but it made a SIGNIFICANT difference in the amt of bass in the car. maybe itll help with the 6 speaker. that way all ud need would be an amp and wire and a loc. maybe like 100ish perchannel at 4 ohms would be plenty. cheapest prices ive seen on ANY stereo equip has been from sonicelectronix so just another suggestion to toss out there at ya.
