Adam, damn those 200hp RSX's that were allowed into STF.

Just the same you were only around 7 tenths off first last weekend. Impressive.

Got any tricks up your sleeve for Nationals 😄😄 ???

Thanks Scott, tough competition there at Blytheville. Can't say I'm jazzed about a 4th place result out of 6 drivers, but as you said I was still in the game and it was close.

Tire testing. More tire testing. Now that I have two sets of 15x7.5 Slips :).

Looks to me that SCCA has just added a new "ST/RSX-S" class.

Yeah, Danny and I took a little beating from the Acura's at Pro-Finale. We'll see how things go with this week at Solo Nats. I think the Mazda can still hang with the Acura's, we're not too far off, but it needs more development. I will be back to work in the garage this Winter on the build and will update this thread accordingly. I still have a few tricks up my sleeve that have yet to be done including some double adjustable dampers which will be going on the car, plus a few modifications David Whitener has been gracious enough to show and explain to me.

Please share I plan on running Nats next year! Except on q6x7 slips cuz 16x7.5 are hard to find or maybe 17x7.5 good luck!!!

So latest development is a change in shocks for the Mazda3. The B14 Bilstein shocks that have graced the car since early 2014 have done a very admirable job, but I've been looking for more spring control as the current setup seems to be towards the upper limit of what the off the shelf Bilstein's can handle.

I have always eyeballed the KW Variant 3 or "V3" suspension for this budget oriented STF build, however the $2,200 retail price was more than I wanted to spend on this old beater. Luckily, I was able to secure a lightly used set recently for a significantly reduced price (Thanks Ken).

The V3's feature independently adjustable rebound and low speed compression damping. Nicely machined aluminum bits throughout. They are made in Germany and feature high grade stainless steel construction so corrosion and/or rust is a non issue. I'm looking forward to getting acquainted to these new shocks!

God I forgot how beautiful that suspension setup looks, makes me miss my Mazda.

Went through the car recently and performed some Spring maintenance along with installing the double adjustable KW dampers, new front brakes ect. I love EBC Yellow pads, but I'm going to give Hawk HP Plus a try up front for the first time. Thanks to Hawk's generous SCCA contingency program I have enough brake pads for the next 10 years, hope I like them as much as I liked the EBC pads.

The time has come to switch gears and take the Mazda in a new direction as STF unfortunately will not be a SCCA class in 2018. I had four good years in STF and will always look back on those years fondly. STF culminated at the 2017 SOLO Nationals last fall where the top 4 spots in class were taken by a Mazda3! Surprisingly not an Acura in sight because the top running Acuras had engine troubles last year. Danny Gross ended up taking the well earned STF title for final year the class was around. I followed him in 2nd place, with David Heddrick 3rd, and Ray Wise (my co-driver) in 4th. Again, all done in a Mazda3 which is pretty stinkin cool.

So I'm starting to get in the garage and begin preparations for the next class my 2006 Mazda3 is headed. The class is called Street Prepared whereas before we were all pretty much in Street Touring. Street Prepared has more allowances than Street Touring thus it's faster, quite a bit faster. On an average sized autocross course I'll need to go about 2 seconds faster just to be equal to where I was before in STF index wise. Eventually I'll be going over details of the 2.5L engine swap, Helical LSD install, and fitment of 11" wide wheels wrapped in Hoosier A7 rubber among other things.

So first things first, I installed and test fitted my "small brake kit" which is nothing more than front caliper brackets and rotors meant for a 2.0L car. Yep, you heard that right, I'm downsizing my 2.3L brakes to 2.0L. Two reasons for this.

1. It saves 5lbs of rotating mass per side.

2. It allows me to use any 15" wheel I want without issues of clearing the larger 2.3L front brakes and I'm a big proponent of using 15" wheels.

Contrary to popular belief, the 2.3L and 2.0L car use the same calipers and pads. Only thing different is the rotor and bracket.

Cool! I don't do track, but I figured if anyone ever decided to downsize their rotors they would need to move to drilled and slotted rotors. Do you think the smaller rotor will be able to tolerate the heat?

Believe it or not, drilled/slotted rotors aren't preferred because they are less durable and don't handle the heat as well as a smooth faced rotor. It's the pads I'd be more concerned about. I'll initially use carry over EBC Yellow pads which have a pretty high heat tolerance and decent amount of bite, so I think they're probably up to the task, however I can go up to super aggressive full on race pads if I need to.

Glad to see this excitement on the forums again, pioneering the 3 into FSP!

As for brakes, that's awesome info. I have been looking at wilwood calipers for a drop in weight at each corner and maybe more brake power, but this is without a doubt the more cost-effective route.

Hey Danny! Thanks man! Good to see you're still here. Actually Mack and Justin Tsang pioneered the 3 into FSP years ago with their 2.3L hatch. Did pretty well with it too, taking several national trophies if I remember correctly. But I'll probably be the first to run a 2.5L swapped car.

Definitely! Wilwoods would cut down even more weight and be the baller option. I might check into them later when looking to shave more lbs off the car. If I go all out, I think 2,550 lbs or even less might be a possibility.

Speaking of 2.5L motors, l picked me up a little something something today ;). Out of a 2011 Mazda3. Approx 65K miles on her. Going to keep it tucked away for now and get back it later in the build.

Oh I remember Mack and Justin, I learned a lot from their set up and I'm pretty much running the same thing on mine!

Yours is a sedan though, so it's different :p


As for future SP stuff, are you planning the lighter flywheel and clutch on the 2.3 or putting it all together with the two-five?

Man 2.5 FSP Mazda 3 sedan, I am interested to see what comes of it. IIRC, our sunroof equipped hatchback was either in the mid 2700 or low 2800lbs.

2550 with a stronger motor, lower CG should be much faster.

I am here looking for a cheap Mazda 3 for DD and came across this. :D
