Anyone else have this happen? I would have this sort of thing occur from time to time with my '97 Escort, but after a few seconds the illumination and display would return. Not so with my 3. It worked fine this AM when I took my kid to school, but when I started the car after dropping him off it was blank and not illuminated. A few hours later when I went to pick him up it was the same story and hasn't so much as flickered back on in the meantime. Everything else works fine, but I have no clue what radio stations I am selecting, what CD or track is playing, volume, etc.

So I have an appt. to bring it to our dealer an hour away. They didn't seem to have a clue what would be causing the issue and are going to see if they can fix it...if not they will need to order a new unit for about a grand (PITA...if they have to do this it means a second trip down there, since they won't order it in advance because of the cost).

Anyone else run into this? If so, what was the problem?

TIA,
k

That's a pretty weird issue. You might want to check to make sure that the connector on the display didn't wiggle loose:

1. Remove the dash strip (start at the middle, work your way left, then carefully remove the right side so you don't break the hook)
2. Remove two Philips screws holding the radio/display assembly in
3. Pull out the radio/display. On '06's and newer the display has its own connector that goes to the wiring harness; make sure this is good and tight. You might want to try reseating it too.

That will at least rule out the possibility the connector just shook loose (which is pretty unlikely anyway). Interesting the dealer would have to order a whole new headunit for you, as the display can be ordered separately (at least, it can for those people who have the clock-too-slow problem).

In MI I wouldn't rule out that option--our roads are so godawful in some areas. My first car was an '87 626 and I remember driving along and having one of the screws fall out of the plastic piece that held the visor in place. Hubby had a section of exhaust on his old Civic work its way loose while on the interstate, too...it was particularly funny as someone was tailgating him and the sparks as metal dragged along asphalt sure made them back off quick!

I've got an appt. to take our 3 in on Monday...it's due for the 15k mile tune-up and an oil change, anyhow, so it's a good chance to see if anything else looks out-of-place.

Did you buy a new one?

The guys at our dealership couldn't fix the display, so they are ordering a new head unit and will replace mine under warranty when it comes in in 2 weeks. Wouldn't bother me too much, but the week after next I will be going on a road trip and will really miss the clock and temp. (not to mention radio/CD display). I'm just glad I don't have the sensor climate controls!

i actually am having this same problem. worked fine one morning, then later in the day it just crapped out. no lights, nothing. just the sound from the radio. i haven't had a chance to take mine by mazda yet but i was going to try and replace the fuse first. i have less than 15k miles, i think it should still be under warranty right? who knows...

Are you sure they're ordering a whole new head unit? On the '06 they should be able to replaced the LCD separately. On the '04 or '05 I could understand it, but on the '06 it seems like overkill.

I had my display go out a month or so after I got my 06 hatch, and the dealer was able to just remove the display, and the radio still worked etc. When I brought it in, they actually removed the display, and I was left with a big hole where the display used to be. Apparently, the dealer said Mazda needed the broken part before they sent out the new one...weird. It sucked that while this happened, I showed my friend who has an 06 GTI my new 3, and I felt sort of embarrassed by the hole

Same thing here...this only used to happen when it was really hot or really cold, now it just happens whenever it feels like it, but most often when its hot. Started happening after I had my display replaced for the TSB with the clock time, I had an appointment to get it fixed but missed it. I've noticed, if you hit the display, it will come back on. That makes me thing that something is just not alligned properly.

I have a 2006 Mazda 3 that i bought new in July and only have 4,500 miles on it. Yesterday my display crapped out. My dealer's service department sounded surprised so i have to bring it in Thursday. i am in New Jersey and we have not had terrible winter this year and when it went it was 50degrees out!
