Now that we're on the topic, anyone know what part everyone is using for the conversion? The spin on housing? (for a 2.3L L3 engine)

Personally I like the cartridge... It's sort of an obsessive compulsive ritual to replace the two O-rings and filter and torque everything to spec with right tools (including Mazda filter wrench).

My warranty might be done in like 8 months. heh

The only reason I like the idea of a spin-on is that there will be no crushed filter. Plus I can use a HUGE filter that increases my oil capacity, and I won't have to use a hex nut + mazda wrench and torque to spec so as not to crack the housing. A spin on filter might be messy though.

I've been using Purolator Pure One PL15505 religiously for 24K miles. (Cept in beginning when my OCI was more frequent, then I used L15505)

I've been meaning to order some filters but my local pep boys stocked up on those filters for me so it makes it easy to just pick them up when I need an oil change. I've also heard good things about the Pure One filters.

I too like the cartridge filter. I like being able to see the filter itself before and after each use. I have only used Wix filters since I dumped the factory fill, and each and every Wix has looked great after 5,000 miles.............No twisting or crushing at all. It doesn't take me any longer to change the cartridge, it just takes a little more work while my oil is draing, (o-rings) that's all. I do however wish that the plastic filter cap was aluminum.

Not exactly though any problems you have with your engine that are remotely related to oil and your dealer will likely use this mode to deny coverage.

Not sure what the appeal is for this "mod", if you are doing this so you won't need a torque wrench to change your oil, well what are you going to use for torquing the bolts when you do the conversion, or are you planning on bolting onto your aluminum engine block without a torque wrench.

Plus if you mess something up you are potentially kissing your engine goodbye, engines are probably close to $5k including installation labor.

All of this for an inferior filter design, just becasue it's what you are "used to"?

Oh man, I didn't know that you coached too! What age? What organization? I was literally just offered something big, but I can't talk fully about it until I decide whether or not to except it.

(hint: 12u Manager for an ASA travel ball team owned by a "several time" U.S. Gold Medal winning Olympian)

I'll PM you next week with the details once I decide. So what's your story? :D

Sorry I didn't mean to imply that the OP or others in this thread had that as their motivation. Though that's a reason I've heard more than once.

It used to be that people complained about the need to get the cartridge filter from the dealer, of course now you can get a filter in any auto parts store for at most he same price as a spin-on so that argument is pretty much shot.

People also complained that with the cartridge filter you need a torque wrench to change your oil, but as I mntioned before you also need a torque wrench to do the conversion so that one doesn't work either.

Honestly I can't think of a legitimate reason one would want to undertake this procedure, it's simply a decent amount of risk with dubious potential for benefit.

The only reason why I am considering this, is because many people have ended up having their oil filter housing (plastic) break on them, and I know of a mechanic at a Mazda dealership who has had to replace many of these. Also seems to be the cause of many people having to get their engines replaced.

+1 for cartridge
-2 for cheap plastic housing

[/quote] "All of this for an inferior filter design", please explain. Is the spin on inferior to the cartridge ? Thanks
