I've worked for UPS for 7 years, I'm a driver sup right now but I have handled many many packages in the past. Things like a lip, or bumper, or any other weird shaped big thing are WAAAAY prone to being f'ed up. We call things like that "irregulars" and irregs in most facilities get their own conveyor belt because they don't do well with the regular boxes. Unfortunately not all irregs are equal. You're lip will be traveling down the same belt as 150lb wood crates, loose tires, rolls of cable and lots of other stuff that can mess your lip up.

The regular shippers of long skinny light things that can't be bent will sometimes zip tie a long piece of wood to the product and use a double wall cardboard box.

You can write "Fragile" all you want on it and no one gives a crap for the most part because they are all loading 1000 pieces per hour making $9/hr to do it.

If you think insurance or over insurance is the answer, think again. The insurance company that handles UPS claims are the biggest dinks ever. They know what stuff is worth and they rarely pay on anything that gets damaged. http://www.ups.com/content/us/en/resources/prepare/guidelines/index.html?srch_pos=1&srch_phr=packaging+guidelines If you don't meet every single piece of criteria on the packaging, they will not pay.

UPS is the best choice to move this on the ground for you though. UPS does ground best, like Fedex does overnight best. DHL does nothing right and is basically in the middle of going out of business in north america right now. And the post office will not accept something like that.

they'll make the corrections during processing and adjust the cost on your credit card. funny that you didn't notice that.

Fo' Sho'

We employ an army of people called "Revenue Auditors" and anything odd shaped, heavy, hand written labels, or internet labels are their target. You will get caught.
