Hi there,

This is my story. A few months ago after a 5 hr road trip I noticed a rattling noise coming from the passenger side vent that would start while driving on speeds > 50 mph.
Anyways, thinking that it was a rattle that could be fixed under my car's warranty, I pointed the rattle out to the dealer while I dropped the car for its 30K Service.

Long story short, the dealer told me that the rattle came from a loose screw that starts bouncing around when going at high speeds (the rattle is not too loud but I can hear it when not listenting to music). So as soon as I heard what he told me, it all dawned on me, a couple of years ago when I removed the head unit to install the Audio Link unit - I remember losing a screw (literally) in the process, and couldn't find it so I just decided to forget about it.
Now that loose screw is the root of the rattling noise. The dealer told me they couldn't find it to fish it out.

How would you guys deal with it? Take it to a body shop? Who'd be the right person for the job? Not sure how to handle it all.

Thanks!

Wait, which passenger side vent is it in? The passenger side center vent, the vent next to the tweeter, or the footwell vent? I'm assuming its in the one by the tweeter, but how in the hell did you drop a screw in there?

The noise is coming from the vent by the passenger's side tweeter.
I did not drop the screw there, I did drop it right behind where the head unit sits. This was a couple of years ago and I forgot about it. When the dealership told me they thought it was a screw that is loose making the noise it made me realize that somehow it made its way there from the place i dropped it and after all this time, you know, by the car moving and such.

I dont think thats possible unless you flipped your car over. Gravity only works in one direction :). [/smartass]

Its definitely another screw. I dont know how to get it out, but if I were you, I wouldnt mess with it as I wouldnt want to mess up the airbag. There are screws holding down that section of the dash located right behind the dash strip. If you want to take matters in your own hands, make sure you disconnect the battery before you disassemble anything (or the airbag may go off).

Well, I do drive pretty aggresively so you never know :)
Anyways, I don't think it's anything I could be able to solve on my own. It bothers me that the dealership couldn't figure it out. I guess I should contact a different Mazda specialist. I wasn't too pushy with the dealer because I thought it was my mistake that caused the rattle... but if it's not possible that the screw could make its way to some place where it would create noise that I could hear from that vent, then it should be fixed under warranty, shouldn't it?

You would think it should be fixed under warranty. It sounds like the dealer tried to fix it by "fishing it out".. which most likely means they looked at it, determined they couldnt get it, and went and got a soda. I'm surprised they even acknowledged that they found the rattle. They'll usually just say they dont know what you're talking about.

Can you actually see the screw.. or no?

No, I can't see the screw... I guess I should try to talk to a different dealership and tell them to fix the rattle in my car as it's still under warranty ;-) See what they come up with.

Actually I'm not sure. When the dealer told me it was a loose screw I put 2 and 2 together (since I lost the head unit screw).

If you have a significant other, or a friend you trust to drive your car, have them drive and you sit in the passenger seat. Then you wont be guessing at the noise and you'll be able to pinpoint it a lot easier.

I've done that... I can definitely hear the rattle coming from the vent but I can't see it through it. The screw (or whatever it is) has to be somewhere towards the bottom of the car on the passenger side. I'll be putting my car for sale soon and this would hinder my chances to sell it :(

theres an old trick assuming its in the plastic vent or duct, go get some thin wire and a magnet

drill a hole in a small magnet tie the wire around on one end, the wire should not be strong enough to hold the weight but enough to move it when downwards vertical so it can flex in the vent

stick it in and go fishin

Yeah I had done a similar thing. I bought a telescopic rod with a magnet in one end and stuck it in the vent. No luck.
I just called a different dealer for them to take a look at it. Hopefully they will admit it's something that will be covered under warranty - otherwise they will kill me with what they will try to charge me.
Thank you guys for your input.

Well well... I took the car to another dealer during lunch and left it there. I showed them how it rattles and they gave me a loaner 6. They just called me telling me the car has been *fixed*, that a couple of the clips in that part of the car were loose. They adjusted the clips, took the car for a ride and couldn't reproduce the rattle. I won't be able to pick it up until tomorrow to see whether the rattle is gone or not but I don't have a great feeling about it! Hopefully I'm wrong.

Thanks for your answers.

Now I have to sell it and get a 2010 :)

Did you ever here that sound again? Do you know what clips the dealership tightened? I am producing the same rattle noise and would love to get rid of it.

I couldn't tell you... I actually sold the car a month later, but I remember the sound not coming back so I was very happy about that.
