i think this is the right section.

to make a long story short. my car got broken into the stole some things. insurance covered it all. now im looking into security systems. i really like the look of the viper 5002 but when i went to a local shop they guy swore to me up and down that its the worst thing to get and when you buy viper you paying for the name. he recommended compustar p2w900fmr. i still thought about getting the viper 5002 off of amazon and having a shop install it or even best buy [that is saying that they would since i didn't buy it from them] any suggestions would be great. as a side note i don't want an automatic car starter.

i guess i should have updated this. forgot i started one of these. i ended up getting the viper 5002 security system and i love it. all the reviews i read people complained about the lcd keychain sucking batteries but ive had mine going on 2 months now and the keychain is telling me i have half a battery left. its a greaaaat system. it warns you about the small stuff. if someone trys lifting you car off the ground. if they smash a window. you think of it and it tells you. i actually have my sensors on high and it will warn me if someone is standing by my car for to long and ive actually caught a few people peeping in my windows. it can get annoying if you park outside and the winds are high but i park in the garage so its all good. i found mine online at a place called sonicelectronics for around 200 and then another 100 for installation.

sorry for the length.

Any of the Directed Electronics ( www.directed.com )owned alarm companies (Viper/Python/Clifford - these are the three DEI premium alarm brands are are pretty much the same thing with different stickers attached) are excellent products. I installed Vipers and Pythons for almost 9 years and can count on one hand the times I saw one of the alarm brains go bad not because of an installation error. I think the Viper 5002 (aka Python902 aka Clifford Matrix 12.5x) would be a great choice if you are not looking for remote start.

The only DEI units i would shy away from would be the responder LED units like the Viper 3002. The alarms worked fine but had a very annoying delay using the remotes (esp when trying to shut off a false alarm). The LCD units like the 5002 don't have this problem.

As for Compustar they are certainly a high quality alarm as well, but I found that they seemed to be much more expensive for somewhat similar features than DEI. Either alarm will work well, but if I guessed I'd say that the sales guy who told you that carries compustar and not viper right?

Don't forget, the KEY to a good alarm is the install. By far the most important thing. The goal is for a thief to not be able to distinguish the alarm wiring from the factory wiring under the dash. Also important is the type of wire connections a shop uses - ie do they solder everything (my preference), use crimp caps (ok), butt connectors and t-taps (I really don't like these for long term reliability, esp the t-taps). A lot of shops use t-taps because they are fast and easy.

Getting an alarm installed at a place like Best-Buy can be hit and miss. It really just comes down to the installer himself, it's too hard to generalize with a company that large. The upside is that you may be more likely to get warranty work out of them if you have a problem.

They carried both compustar & viper but I had pretty much set my mind on viper profucts because my brothers have always had them in their cars. But at the place they really were pushing compustar. I'm guessing they signed something with compustar & their viper deals were about to end so idk. But you just gave some people some pretty good info IMO.
