I know plenty of people that use them for autocross and are satisfied. I have used them myself, but my personal preference is no harness.

They work well if you don't have to adjust them (i.e single driver).

If you need to adjust them quickly between runs (i.e a dual driver car) then it gets a bit more dicey as they do not adjust easily.

I prefer a 3" shoulder belt myself and would recommend a harness.

I ran with the rallye 4 schroth harness the past 2 seasons in my old car and plan to transfer them over to the 3. They were very comfortable and adjustment wasnt bad. The only problem is if you have to adjust the strap behind the seat. So as PZ said, for a dual driver setup, it may take a bit of trial and error to get the back strap so it works out for both drivers.
the only problem I had was with my racing seats in my old car. The adjustments for the lap belt were so far off to the side that they got in the way of the holes comming through the bolsters effectively making the seat a tad narrower than intended. However, I ran very narrow seats so this prob wouldnt be an issue on 99% of the seats available.
