Rear end rattles over bumps and uneven ground

I purchased my Mazda 3 a month and a half ago, and ever since I bought it I have heard a rattling coming from the rear end of the car. I thought at first my jack wasn't in the mount properly (as the sound sounds like a jack that's rattling around). I remounted the jack properly and still, the noise was there. Today since it was nicer out I had my windows down and I can now tell the noise is coming from the exterior of the vehicle at the rear end. It is at the rear driver's side and sounds like a metal-on-metal rattle when going over a bump.

If anyone knows what could be causing this it would be great if I could solve this noise as it is EXTREMELY annoying.

Thanks,
Quinton

woodsy102 led me to the solution.
In my case, I too had a cracked spring on the rear driver side. It was hard to find (hidden) unless you knew what you were looking for (thanks dude). The dealearship i bought my car from found it once i sent them the link to this page. It was cracked towards the bottom half. They have replaced the spring with a new one, and thus far no noise.
I've had the same issue with my Mazda and it's annoying the hell out of me, I've had both struts replaced, sway bar links, boot struts, new break pads, the sound is still there.

I will ask the mechanic to look at the coil for cracks and top and bottom rubbers that it sits on. So frustrating.

Thats exactly what my problem was also. Thanks to your info I found a loose 6” piece of coil spring sitting in the bottom of the
Automotive tire Motor vehicle Rim Gas Bumper
spring mount arm recess accounting for the rattling!

Good tips here. My friend is looking at this Mazda 3 with 168k miles on the clock and it intermittently rattles over bumps. The owner parked it after getting a new ride for his retirement. We'll take a look tomorrow after we installed the bumper and winch from 4Wheelonline onto the truck.

Hey Quinton, I had a similar issue come up with my 2011 Mazda 3 yesterday. Metal on metal rattle from the rear passenger side all of a sudden. After a thorough visual inspection, I found that the top mount for the rear passenger shock had cracked around both mounting nuts, and was allowing the top of the shock to rattle around freely. I got one for about $40 and followed a YouTube video for the steps to replace it. Just finished this evening and problem seems to be gone. Hope that helps!
Sam
