I purchased my Mazda 3 a month and a half ago, and ever since I bought it I have heard a rattling coming from the rear end of the car. I thought at first my jack wasn't in the mount properly (as the sound sounds like a jack that's rattling around). I remounted the jack properly and still, the noise was there. Today since it was nicer out I had my windows down and I can now tell the noise is coming from the exterior of the vehicle at the rear end. It is at the rear driver's side and sounds like a metal-on-metal rattle when going over a bump.
If anyone knows what could be causing this it would be great if I could solve this noise as it is EXTREMELY annoying.
Thanks for the reply. I read all 9 pages and only found a couple of suggestions. Tomorrow it is suppose to be nice out again so i will check the strut mounts and the end links hopefully that will solve the issue.
my mazda3 sedan does the same thing, and oddly started right after i put on the 215/45r17 continental ExtremeContact DWS tires and the stoptech brakes. i checked around mine... the only things i could find is the rear shock boot which is a hard plastic seems "loose" and seems like it is banging against the actual shock boot, but i am not sure if it could actually be that loud considering the movement of it and it sounding more metallic. brakes are all tight. i checked the end links but i am not sure if it would be that. any other suggestions?
If you look under the back end of your car near the passenger rear tire, there's a part that bolts up. I got my brakes replaced last year and shortly after, coincidentally I believe, I got a rattle going over bumps and uneven ground. I was missing the bolt that holds up the lines near the passenger tire wheel well. Re-bolted it and no rattle. Hope that helps!

do you have a pic of what im looking for? or a better description of what it is? that way it helps me narrow it down... its getting worse and driving me batty
Alright. So i have checked the following: Endlinks (fine not loose), The strut's (mounted firmly), Rear breaks(Tensioner clip is on and breaks set up correctly), The trunk hinges (tight and greased).
So all those are out of the question, what else could it be. I did notice however the rubber bushings on the rear sway bar are worn down. Would this cause a rattling noise?
Any other ideas would be great!
PS I will be checking the lines on the passenger side.
I noticed the shock boots on my car loose as well.. But they are hard plastic, no way it could be making the rattling noise im hearing... I did also noticed the heat shield was hanging down a bit never thought to check it! I will do it when my car gets back home.
On my car the rear seatbelt inertia reel tensioner things make a rattling noise when it's cold outside. Not much you can do about it as they are supposed to move around a bit and lock up if your in an accident. It's worth investigating if your running out of ideas.
Check the heat shield and securely attached. I will have to investigate into the seatbelt coil. But would it sound like it is coming from the exterior of the car? The only real time the noise is 100% clear is when i have my window or moonroof open.
Looks like im going to have to do what i didnt want to and take it to a mechanic to look at Ill wait out the week though and hopefully someone else has a suggestion i can try before than!
check the spring cushions that sit on top of the rear springs...make sure they haven't shifted out of place. I had this same problem but I have eibach springs
Hi,
I'm new to this forum and also to Mazdas. I realize this is a few months old, but I just got an 08 that is displaying the same problem. I was wondering if anyone was able to figure it out. I have about 12k left on my bumper to bumper.
thanks
Mike
It was the rear driver side coil spring, it had the bottom rung cracked off of the rest and every time there was sufficient jarring of the vehicle it would rattle against the rest of the coil spring as well as the coil spring mount.
Whoever has this issue with rattling maybe check it out?
just installed Koni FSD's + Eibach Pro Kit, and just as i was driving home, i realized i had that creeking noise as some of you have described. and it is coming from passenger side rear end.. its weird because i thought it was the jack rubbing up against the bolt, because it was loose. But i ended up taking out everything included the spare tire..
it only rattles on occasional bumps, and uneven grounds as OP stated. Makes me wonder what it really is.. but funny for me because i had the noise before i installed koni fsd + springs, but it wasnt as bad then as opposed to now.
anyone have a solution, seems like couple of us have the same problem
