I've been thinking about investing in a radar detector as they are legal in the state of MD (as far as I know).

I was curious if anyone had one. If so, which brand do you recommend and any experiences with them?

If not, would you buy one or stay away from em? Thanks!

I had one, Cobra dash mounted, cigarette lighter type (forgot the model). I was using driving it down to FL. Got nailed in W. Virginia doing 94mph. Came up over a hill and the cop was on the next one and got a tag on me (and 2 other cars). Didn't even send up a signal. Now I try to be safer and skip the detector.

Don't really need one in PA unless I'm going to be speeding on the state highway. Cops aren't allowed to use radar around here.

how much do you want to spend on the radar detector, they range from like 40 - 500

Nope, I haven't had one in like around 7-8 years now. I don't grossly speed enough to warrant owning one. I think having one is simply an excuse to speed more than you normally would.

As it is we get to drive pretty fast around here anyways. ;)

btw, i have the $75 dollar cobra that seems to work just as well as my friends 200+ passport. I've also heard great things about the radar detector that now shows the direction the radar detector is... detecting. I'm not sure what the name is but I'll post it once i find out.

BTW here is a little review on 3 of them

Tested Escort 8500 against Valentine One Version 1.8 and BEL Vector 985 Testing each unit one at a time to prevent any interference from one another units were tested against my Stalker DSR 34.7 GHZ KA band radar system in stationary mode only. When the antenna is aimed at an angle constantly on, detection becomes very difficult even for the best detectors giving you 1-3 seconds before being clock, most radar encounters happen within 1/2 mile and results will very depending on terrain, atmospheric conditions etc. but gives a good idea no rear detection test done Valentine One is the only unit with rear antenna and would easily win this test.

Ka Straight away

Valentine One v1.8 Distance 2.5 Miles
Escort 8500 Distance 2.5 Miles
BEL Vector 985 Distance 2.5 Miles

Ka top of Hill maximum range 3 degrees hill w/ straight away.

Valentine One v1.8 Distance 1.5 Miles
Escort 8500 Distance 1.5 Miles
BEL Vector 985 Distance 1.7 miles

Ka curve test winding road

Valentine One v1.8 Distance 1,000 Feet
Escort 8500 Distance 1,200 Feet
BEL Vector 985 Distance 900 Feet

Quickest instant-on ( first to sound alarm 1/4 Mile)

BEL Vector 985 sounded alarm 1/2 second before the others.
Escort 8500 / Valentine One v1.8 sound alarms at the same time approx.

False Alarms
BEL Vector 985 Escort 8500 are the winners, Valentine One false much on full sensitivity, but Advance Logic Mode works great.

Comments: All units are reliable and nearly identical, BEL Vector 985 was the loudest followed by Valentine One v1.8 Escort 8500 could be louder, all units easy to hear under moderate noisy enviroment.

Worst windshield mount Valentine One easily breaks, followed by BEL Vector 985, Escort 8500 probably the best I've seen.

Can't go wrong with a PNI - best bang for the buck IMO - about $120 USD on e-bay. For those in illegal states / provinces, they are the only detector that is both VG2 and spectre invisable - most of the cops are now using the spectre to home in on detectors.
Also, spec wise, it is similar to all the others (they are all pretty close to being alike) - It's also cordless which is a must!
Do some research (I did) and you will end of with a PNI

V1 here. The bogey counter and directional indicators are absolutely invaluable. I don't feel right when I'm driving without it.

Never had a problem with my windshiled mount, and I've been using it for 2 years now. I did have to return it for one warranty fix a year ago (stopped picking up X band from the front), but no problems since then.

Pricey... but so are tickets.

so thats why i need something invisible like that i can put in the glovecomp.
just found some to put on the fronwindow, but that the cops can see to easily. so is there any option on hideable radardetectors??? and not expensive? (something between 50 & 150 bucks)
