The initial flash is a high voltage spike from the igniter, which ionizes the gas inside the envelope and gets the arc going, or more accurately creates conditions where an arc can be sustained at lower voltage. After that it settles down to ~80 volts which is enough to bridge the gap in an ionized environment.

on the topic of flickering, when i go over tiny bumps on the road or even speed bumps,
my HIDs will flicker/shake...did i do something wrong on the install like a loose connection?
or is this normal as well ? it looks pretty cheap when that happens.. :(

Normally output shouldn't be flickering. I am not sure what shake means though...

I would start from

If bulb sit ok? when bulb not sitting well,,even with stable output, look like flickering and of course not good for bulb, system.

and then, if it IS light flickering ( unstable output ) over bump
Check if both side have same problem. If it's only one side, try swapping bulb to see if it's caused by bulb or not first.

If it happens only over bump( by vibration/shock) , it's natural to think loose connection ( can be included inner circuit connections of ballst/ignitors in worst case...hope not!!)

[/quote]thanks for the reply!
by shake i mean, when the car shakes my lights shake as well (output) making it seem like the bulbs are loose in their socket (both)
how can i test if they sitting loose (as you mentioned) ? should they "click" into something and remain solid in place ?
even if they are in properly, any recommendations as to securing the holding more ?

For aftermarket H7 conversion HID kit, usually should set with proper spacer.

spacer example ↓

With spacer, bulb retainer spring should holding bulb+spacer very thight and won't wiggle easily. Like when you change halogen bulb, it's even pain to release bulb retainer spring.

I found pic spacer installed

H7 HID conversion kit bulb + Spacer
Spacer give enough height on bulb so retainer spring can hold with proper tension.

Mazda 3 projectors have a little play in them. That's normal. I hope you do have spacers though for your HID bulbs. That why all our kits come with them. :)
