Guys I need some help here and I thought most of the MazdaSpeed3 drivers use this are of the forum. I posted in maintanance but I need your input.

http://www.mazda3forums.com/index.php?topic=73843.msg1312313#msg1312313

I am goign to be changing my oil this weekend and I thought I would ask some questions before I did it. I don't like takign the car to the dealer if it is somehting I can do myself.

I saw some of the other posts on here about the normal Mazda3 2.3L but I am not sure if the same goes for the MazdaSpeed 3 as well.

Here are my questions:

- What type of oil does Mazda use? What do they put in the car from the factory?
- What type of oil filter do they use? (Brand)
- What size oil filter will work (After market)?
- What is the part number for the crush washer?

Last but not least I havce heard some mixed opinions about using synthetic oil on the turbo version due to blowby of oil into the intercooler? Anybody have anyhting to add on that? I think I will just use what the dealership would use but I need to know what that is.

I'm getting my oil changed at the dealer today.

I don't have answers to all your questions but the tech said that they use 5w20 but would use 5w30 if I wanted them to.

He said that I definitely should not use synthetic oil but didn't go into specifics.

If you have a Speed, you must use 5w30. The NA engines use 5w20.

I had them reuse the old stuff. Old oil gives you more power.

Nah, I just didn't feel the need to list it.

Are you kidding me? I read my manual and it said to use 5W20. Nowhere did it specify using 5W30 for the turbo engine. I even went to the mobil 1 website and looked up my car and they list the oil for a speed 3 turbo as the 5W20.

Where are you guys seeing 5W30?

Holly crap.... I hate the mazda website. I was usign the manual they have online and it only calls out 5W20. I looked at my hard copy today and saw what you were talkign about it does call out for 5W30 oil on the turbocharged version

now I have to go try and get autozone to do a return- I hope it is not a problem.

By the way what do you guys sugeest in terms of an oil filter?

Autozone only offers Fram and STP

I would liek to get a purelator but Autozone does nto carry the brand and the closest store is not all that close.

I have been getting the original mazda filters at the dealer. I think they're like $6. I could be wrong, but I don't think Fram and STP even make an oil filter for our cars.

If you go to autozone and put our car in the site and search for filters you will find they have STP and Fram filters listed for our car.

I could be wrong but I even went to te fram website and looked up the car and they had the same filter number listed.

http://www.power-21.com/honeywellpower21i/Application.aspx?b=F&vt=1

Or if the link does not work here is what was on the page:

4-2.3L F/inj. (16V) DOHC Turbo

Extraguard CH9641

Or check out the Autozone website
http://autozone.com/N,14200000//shopping/partTypeResultSet.htm

Stp / Oil Filter S9641
Fram / Oil Filter CH9641

If I feel like going for a drive tomorrow I might go to the dealer in my area and buy a filter from them just ot have it on record and so that I use the OEM brand. But end of the day the filter type should not matter so long as we change our oil and filter in the recommended intervals. YOu should be abel to use any filter and your warranty not be effected.

Huh, your right they do list them now. I checked about 3 months ago and couldn't find a listing. Maybe they recently started to make them for our cars. You can use any filter brand without voiding the warranty. You don't have to use Mazda. Thanks for info.

Yeah I don't feel like driving to the dealer. I will probably just go get teh 5W30 oil at autozone (I hope they have 6qt of the full syn stuff). And I guess I will use the fram filter or I may exchange that for an STP since I have read that STP is a better filter and manufacturer (Champion) than Fram is.....

they should really update the website, or decide which is correct. it takes 2 seconds to update a web file.
I heard dealers in canada were saying 5w30 in summer, 5w20 in winter. 5w30 is becoming a new standard in cars because of strict mpg pressure from government agencies. actually, cars like the honda fit are now stripping out safety features, to reduce weight so that they can be eligible for federal rebates for good mpg rating.
5w30 will protect better, but give slightly less mpg. take your pic.

PS you would think the web version is the more uptodate....but logic here points to 5w30.

Ha ha yes I used the 5W30 cause the book that came with the car said to. Makes sense since the turbo is goign to make everything run a little hotter. Using full synthetic should help as well. Hopefully there will not be a whole lot of blowby into the intercooler. But I am thinking that my MPG should remain around the same number or go up slightly... All depends on what they had in the car originally. If htey had 5W20 in it then I expect things to stay the same for the most part. IF they were using 5W30 then I expect to see my MPG go up a slight amount.

I don;t have enough miles to make a great comparrison but I will try... I keep a record of ever fill up and my MPG per each tank of gas.

It should also be noted that alot of people are finding that the engine only takes 5qts of oil, including me. So, fill up 5 qts first, start the engine, shut it off, and check the dipstick. If you need 6 qts, then just add another qt.

I wouldn't use either the Fram or STP filter. STP=Fram and Fram=crap. NAPA usually has WIX filters in our size, and WIX filters are good. If not, use a Mazda one.

[/quote]by the way, the Fram and STP filters are not the same. Go in and open the boxes, both are just a little different and are made in completely different places.

and my car took 6qts, most people are finding that it really does take 6.

I did look at both filters side by side, they looked the same to me :dunno: Both have nearly the same part number, and both are listed in the FRAM filter book (no other brands listed).

I don't especially trust either brand, in any case. And the Mazda filter isn't that expensive. I'm thinking of buying the 10-pack that Ron Tonkin sells for a nice price. That ought to take care of my oil changes for a few years :)

For those of you who have taken your car into the dealership for an oil change. Are they using Castrol Semi-synthetic or the full-synthetic type. I'm going in tomarrow its been 3 months and I have 2000 miles on my car. I'm thinking of picking up some Mobile one and make them use that in my car.
