Unless it's an ultra steep hill I never have used the E-brake when starting out, I just get good at the vroom vroom and clutch it method. People have a bad tendency to stop right up on your bumper at stop lights so where I was driving my MT I had to get good at not rolling back at all.

use heal toe. it works wonders on steep hills.
