I've owned my '07 Speed 3 for about a year now and at about 16,000 miles the check engine light came on so I whipped out my trusty Actron OBD-II code reader and connected it up, chose the Ford (J1850 PWM) settings and attempted a scan... it returned a general error to check my connections and try again... so after repeating this step 3 times or so I checked my Sentra... worked flawlessly. Then I returned to the Mazda and tried every other protocol for OBD-II codes (ISO 9141, J1850 VPW, and CAN) and got the same error; "Check Connections." After reading a bit online I found several discussions about the "complexity" of the Speed 3's ECU, however nothing on how to scan OBD-II codes. Has anyone else had this issue? Or any ideas?

Check to see if your scanner is CAN compliant. All new mazda's use the CAN protocol with the OBD-II system.
