Having my first problem with the car.

My G/F weighs 90lb (imp) and the passenger side airbag light stays on all the time (which means the bags AND seatbelt pretensioner are OFF). This has been the case since I bought the car last Wed. The auto system is supposed to turn off the bags for any occupant between 1 and 59 lbs (imp).

Well, this morning, the MAIN (inst. panel) airbag light came on, and stayed on. I pulled over, turned off the ignition, then restarted, same thing.

I am calling Mazda this morning, will keep you guys posted.

EDIT: Thread title

I had the same problem after about 3 weeks of owning my 3. It was in the shop for about a week and a half till they figured the problem out, as it wasn't giving any codes, just the light. They replaced the air bag module and the cluster and it didn't fix it. They put mine back in and finally got a code that it was the front impact sensor. They ended up replacing the module and the front impact sensor and everything is working properly again. I'm hoping this is the last of my problems. Hopefully this info will help you with a quicker fix then mine was. I hated having a crappy rental car for so long.

Winning Blue, did they give you a service loaner, or a rental car. I am concerned with that.

I would not mind having a protege or a 6, but I am driving 7 hours this weekend, I dont' want to be stuck in an escort or a neon....

They gave me a rental. My dealer doesn't have loaners. Usually they rent Proteges when people have their cars in for service, to keep you in a Mazda, but they were out of them. I ended up with a bare bones Sentra. It was pretty crappy. The rental company switched me to a Protege after about a week. It was also crappy, as there was a tire out of balance or something similar that made a huge knocking at highway speeds. I ended up having a rental for just over 2 weeks. It was right before Christmas, and they weren't done my car before I went on holidays. So the rental sat at the airport for 6 days instead of my new car. I was actually pretty happy about that.

Actually, the more I think about it, the happier I am that this is happening now.

Why put mile on the 3 when I can put miles on someone elses car. Especially since I am not supposed to drive steady speeds in the 3, so that would mean no Cruise.

Oh well.

and thanks for the info, I will print and give to the mazda guy tomorrow.

Man, get your GF to put on a little weight! ;) I thought I read in the manual though that the weight sensor in the passenger seat was something closer to 88pounds? That may be why that's tripping. I'll have to check again and see.

My wife is 5'2", 100 pounds. The air bag sensor has not indicated a problem.

Yep, something is screwey with mine, hopefully it is just some faulty sensor in the seat, and they won't keep my car for 2 weeks.

I've "known" a few ladies that were 110 and 5'0-5'3 and yeah it was all about filling out up top. Maybe just get her to hold a 10 pound sack of flour when she sits in the seat! :D

My airbag light has shown similar bad behavior last week, but the problem has vanished over the weekend.

I guess that my car wasn't too happy about seeing a repair guy for the first time! It passed its 1000th km today, it's too young for the shop... :)

Mine was intermittent. In fact when I left it at the dealership it was doing it, but when they checked it 30 minutes later it wasn't. That also made diagnosing the problem a little tougher.

And just to make sure everyone knows what the problem is, it's the airbag light on the instrument cluster, not the one that says the passenger airbag is off. My problem, and the one described in the first post of this thread have nothing to do with the passenger seat. It was the impact sensor and airbag module.

Looks like the weight range for the pass airbag looks like this:

0-59 lbs: air bag off

60-92 lbs: ???

93+ : air bag on

Very stange that there is that gap in the middle.....

Anyway, this mine is in the shop b/c the main light is staying on all the time (in the inst. cluster).

Mazda called me today and told me that they have no service manuals to use, and that they are dealing with Mazda (corporate) directly to diagnose the problem.

Meanwhile, I get a CorollaS to drive around. not as nice as my 3, but, honestly, not that bad.

this is the second case that this has happen... hmmm
Ya, mine was the first (that I had heard of). I'm sure the number of people that read and post on this and mazdaworld's 3 board is just a small percentage of 3 owners. I wonder if there are others out there. Maybe there will be a recall?

i highly doubt there will be a recall. Since it doesn't seems like a majority of ppl are having the same problem. if you look at this board.. only 2 cases out of how many 3s?

Saw a work order for "04 3 Airbag" at my dealer today while my radio in the PRO was replaced (finally and for the 2nd time).

Could be a little early production glitch (like I'm having with the PRO's radio)...

UPDATE:

It has now been 6 days since I dropped off the car.

I have been contacted ONCE by the stealership, they called on Thursday (dropped it off Wednesday morning), to tell me that they had no idea what the problem was.

I understand this is a new car, but the stealership service manager told me that they don't have the service manual, so they can't fix it.... I personally think this is BS, but, I guess we shall see.

I guess now that I have had this Toyota CorollaS rental, I should go find a "my honda is better than your mom's toyota" they seem to be the "cool" way to post!!
