Been lurking here for a couple weeks since I ordered my Black Speed GT. Appreciate ALL the discussion. I've had a Red 06' Gt for a year (my 1st Mazda since a B2000 - 25 yrs ago!)... bought it the week gas went to $3.15/gal here in AL. By way of an intro, I'm a 49yo Realtor/developer/investor and have owned way, WAY too many cars and ALL kinds of gas powered vehicles over the years... Still Do... and I still have ALL my Hot Wheels cars from the 60's and 70's... have had to hide them in the attic from my 11yo son ... they're collectors items after all. Alright my question already: If you drive your Speeds Reeel Easy, staying completely out of the boost (I know it's going to be hard)... can you get significantly better Mpg? Has anyone tried this. If gas goes back to over $3/gal (or Much More!)... can the Speed still be a true Economy car?? And when I say easy, that means doing the speed limit, slowing down up hills and letting everyone else pass you. Kinda like having Nitros... driving around for hours/days and never using any of your expensive spray... but when you need a little shot- It's there. Of course, as long as gas is under $2.35/gal, It won't matter. Thx, appreciate any replies.
Thanks Matt' ... didn't expect a reply so quickly. I will be driving mostly back county 2-lane & 4+ lane hwys - averaging 55 to 70 mph.... So hopefully I'll get mid better than 25mpg. -Need'
If you can ease up to 65, and stay there in sixth, it would be easy to achieve upper mid twenties, but good luck not getting on the boost... it is virtually impossible. I try not to be to hard on her, but she likes to go fast to much. Car is nothing but trouble waiting to happen .
Yeah. It's fairly easy to drive under the limit and get good numbers, the problem is, your right foot will never let you. But given your drive, I would think 25-30mpg to be achievable.
An aftermarket tuner with an economy program could be the answer. I am hoping this thing will push the 30 mpg barrier with the right tune. There is no reason with all the technology in this car that we can't have our cake and eat it to.
if you dive the speed limit, stay below boost and drive smart you can get high 20's with the possibility of seeing 30 if you drive just right. For what this car does, its economy is very nice.

comparing a ms3 to a civic ehh? why not compare it to a battery operated prius while your at it.

lol exactly my thought, or better yet the toyota echo. Totally different market, one performance the other economy. I had the 'joy' of getting a suzuki 'swift' for a rental car while my speed 3 was in the shop courtesy of the dealership... of course I had to try and see how fast the thing would go.. made it to highway speed, and tested it from 120-140 (it actually made it to 140) but, too soooo long that I'm pretty sure my speed 3 would accelerate from a standstill to 140km/hr as quick as the swift went from 120-140.

My point is: in the whole grand scheme of gas milage, the speed3 is somewhere in the small/mid SUV segment, not in the compact car segment.
But driving a speed3 like this is a criminal act and should be punishable  It's performance car neglect.
A couple of you guys missed the point of my question, most got what I was getting at. IFFF gas goes to $3, $4 or more per gallon.... CANNNN the MS3 get reasonably decent mileage... in an emergency! How soon we all have forgotten what high gas prices "feel" like... You can bet, that much higher gas prices will be back. Thx, -Need
Yes I get it... But ya, if you feather the gas constantly, I'm sure you'll see 24 MPG. The question is: is that good enough cause gas WILL go higher and STAY higher - mark my words

I think you could do it, if you really wanted to. Of course, there's what my plan is.
Buy another car. And have 2.

Keep it off boost, at 55mph and drive it like a grandma and you will get 350+ miles per tank FOR SURE
My first tank lasted me 300 miles and I did some spirited driving.

[/quote] Yes, I can verify this. I'm getting 26 - 27 all the time and I don't drive like a gramdma. On a trip with cruise on 30 mpg is doable. Now add the CAI and this is reported to give + 2 mpg. So you could be at 32 - when using cruise control. I'm a bit surprised too at how good the MPG can be for how much power and torque this car has. I think the direct inject is partially responsible for this. When the tuners (cp-e, cobb , xede) come out and the air fuel ratio is made better, then the car will be even better. 8) 8)
If you're that much in financial trouble that you can't pay an extra $10 per week to fill up your tank, you shouldn't be buying a car at all!
Yeah, if you coast at 1500-2000 RPM everywhere you CAN get 27 mpg no problem...but I'll be really pissed if I see a fellow MS3 driver slowing down traffic...
I would suggest an RSX-S or a Civic Si, those things don't waste gas 'till you get to 5000+ RPM. Our MPG drops to single digits at 2900 RPM
