OIL CHANGE: Dealer put 20 miles on my car - #@%[email protected]!*&

A little rant here.

My wife took my 2007 Mazdaspeed 3 in to the dealer for a CEL, oil change, and pulling to left problem.

They gave her a loaner and had the car ALL day (she took in first thing in the morning). The tech said it was the first Speed3 they worked on.

The CEL was the intake runner prob. that everyone is getting - said Mazda was coming out with another part to fix the issue but it would take 3 weeks to come in. My wife was in the car when they took it for a test drive to show them the pulling to on side. They aligned the car, reset the CEL and changed oil.
My wife ended up taking the loaner car home at 5.30pm when they still were not done. This morning at 10am I pick up my Speed3.

On the way home I looked at the oil change sticker "Next oil change 7470"
then I looked at my odometer 2490. (They add 5000 to the odometer for next oil change).
So after the oil change they put 20 miles on my car.
Don't know if it was a bunch of joy riding, or customer tests, but this sucks 20 MILES!!

I can see a couple of miles after the alignment but what the hell 20 miles???? :( :(

Am I making a fuss over nothing or did the dealer abuse my car ? :madcrazy: :madcrazy:

Should I be pissed or forget it? All I know is next time I'm going to make a point to the service manager about this.

It's a mazdaspeed, and the "first one they worked on". They fixed the problems, then when the shop was closed two of the guys took her out for a nice spin. Likely redlined it a few times and took it on the highway to get the top speed. Simple enough.
The reason I think that is I knew two guys who worked for Chevy and they did that exact thing. If the customer had a fast ride, and they were complaining about the alignment, it was a green light for them. Hell, a guy brings a Corvette Z06 in to check the steering, and you aren't gonna have fun with it? Espcially if it's left overnight, since they can try it out when the shop closes and go home for the night.
What is the owner gonna say? Hey man, you put 20 miles on my car, what gives? Well, you asked them to check the alignment and had a CEL, they can justify the mileage by test driving. Gently, of course.
There is no other rational for 20 miles on the odometer. You brought the first speed in there, and they got to experience what the bitch had. I'd be shocked if it was any different than that.

They put 0.8 miles on my car for a CEL

Again they where probably testing alignment or something... or maybe a little joyride...
I got an alignment done at my local shop. They put 1 mile on the car. If they really did put 20 on this guys car, this is no other explanation that I can see. 20 miles is ALOT on city streets, they must of really been rev happy. They likely figured since your wife brought it in that she would never even question it, since women just turn the key and go. In my opinion I would talk to the shop manager and ask. As I said before though, they are covered. They can say the mileage for the next oil was written wrong, that the alignment kept giving them issues, or the CEL did. I know one thing, if I had 20 miles on my car for maintenance like this, I would never go back to that shop.
Reminds me of the joyride scene from Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
That does seem excessive, HOWEVER the proper way to check a vehicle for a pull is to :
1: test drive and verify complaint.
2: rotate front tires side to side and test drive again.
3:if this doesn't correct , then rotate rear tires left to right, again test drive.
4:align vehicle, test drive
see the process? if each test drive is only3-5 miles you get to 20 pretty quick.
Does everyone here always assume the worst of the human race in general or is it just technicians?
I would complain, 20 miles is overboard. Find yourself a mechanic you can trust, that is not very difficult, join your local Miata club forum and ask who they use, there will be one or two shops that these people trust, the (we) are fanatical about who they (we) let drive or even thouch their (our) Miatae.

I considered letting the dealer install the remote start and 6 disc CD changer/MP3 player in my wife's new 2007 Mazda 3s Touring, until I called my mechanic (www.gasheadmotorworks.com) and he will charge me $150 to do both. I also know that he will not go for a joy ride.
There could be a completely innocent explanation for this. Did you (or your wife) actually check your mileage before the car was left at the dealer, or are you basing your conclusion that your car has 20 extra miles on it solely from what the oil change sticker says?

A 9 can easily be confused with a 7. Maybe the technician really meant to write 7490 on the sticker. Or maybe he did write 7490, but his writing is so sloppy that it looks like a 7?

Again, unless you can really prove that your odometer read at least 20 miles less before you brought it in to the dealer, I don't think that you're going to get anywhere even if you talk with the service manager.
Actually what happened is he checked the mileage before the wife left

Then she went to a booty call that was 10 miles away from the dealer, cut back and went to dealer

He then saw it had an extra 20 miles on it from what it should have been, but doesnt know about the booty call

Oh ok I'm really glad you are on the forum. Thanks for pin pointing the problem for me. Now I'll just confront the wife instead of the service manager. Could I have your phone number in case I have questions about any details ? Thanks :screwy:

That sucks, I'd ask them about it because it should only take several miles to see if the car is pulling.

The service manager should do the math and simply tell the technicians they are receiving complaints about excess mileage put on the car they work on. I would at least call them so it doesn't happen to anyone else...

Personally, I think either they took your car joy riding, or they took several tries to fix the alignment and the techs are inefficient at setting the alignment.

However, if your wife hit a curb or pothole which threw off the alignment (which probably something like that happened), then perhaps they were trying to solve a problem more difficult than we think...I know the alignment on the Mazda3 is pretty solid as long as you don't whack the wheels on anything.

Good luck, and let us know what the dealership says.

Alright firstly I almost lost my coffee over the desk reading that - f*cking hilarious. No offence meant to anyone, we can all see it was just a joke and a great comeback.

Secondly it sounds a little high to me and I'd mention it - no way they'll admit any wrongdoing but at least if you take it there again for something else they won't be tempted to do it again.
It was a joy ride or a few joy rides no doubt in my mind. Makes ya wish you had a hidden camera in there huh?
yeah it says 5000 miles, on the sticker, i wondered about that in the speed3 but i read through the manual and it inded say 5 months or 5000 miles, but it also says the speed3 are taking 6 quarts also. so fi the dealership charges you the same for a 4 quarte oil change its good.

as fo rthe 20 miles i would start by askign them. maybee someone higher up took it out to double check the work see fi it fixed it. sometimes when you reset a cel, you have ot put 20 miles on a car at a higher speed without hittign the brakes, keeps ht elight form coming on.
well thats what my smog tech would make me do on my other car if hte light comes on, but low speeds and brakign didnt make it reset only hard brakign at high speed (dont knwo why?)
I want to pick up install a motion activated video surveillance in my car. And maybe pick up a couple extra for bed and bathroom fun.

jk, haha
