New Rear Brake Pads are in: Part Number

8473 Views 35 Replies 28 Participants Last post by  adaughen
I just got the call from my dealer and the updated pads for the 3 are available. They are for cars made before march, I think, newer vehicles had them installed at the factory. The Part number is:

BPYK-26-48Z

The dealership should install this for free, but most likely you will have to argue a bit. At least I won't have to wash rear wheels every week any more.

I picked up my car last week and the rear brakes make an awful grinding noise that is quite noticeable and there is more break dust on the back than the front.

EXACTLY what I'm getting. My first oil change is fast approaching and I'm planning on getting those thuper duper padth for the rear and the new mounts for the front. Literally the only 2 issues I'm having right now are fixable!

Well there is one more thing, but it's something no one else has reported on. Just some really nasty noises from the engine at low RPM's. Probably a bad water pump or alternator.
Factrzero,

What dealership are you going to get these fixes done at? If you're in my area, perhaps we can both go in and tell them about the problem in case they give either of us a hard time...

Let us know if you get new pads that stop the grinding or the front caliper mount change. My dealer wasn't aware of a TSB for the mount and said there was no new brake pads. I showed him a print out of the TSB from here (for the mounts) and he said it was probably a US only thing. Going to call Mazda Canada when I get a chance and see what they have to say.

Let me know what Mazda Canada says. I'm from Canada too. My rear rotors are starting to groove, so I wanna know what the deal is. Thanks.
New brake pads

I just talked to service rep at my dealer. He checked and said no one there has heard a thing about new brake pads.

This is a major dealer in the Wash DC area which sells lots of Mazdas.

He told me to bring it in but they would just swap the pads, that's not gonna get the job done.
Whats the TSB number for those front caliper mounts... i'm very anoid with the squeeling in the mornings...
European Breaks??????????

I e-mailed a dealer in Edmonton yesterday and asked what was up with the break problems on the Mazda 3 (with a link back to this thread and a few threads like it). He told me that the Mazda 3 originally came equipped with European spec breaks and that they were designed for road conditions over there. He continued on to say that current production runs have had this problem corrected. When exactly this took effect I'm not sure.

Not sure what would constitute the need for crap pads in Europe. Perhaps they all break with the engine only overseas
Came back from the dealer yesterday...told me they were aware of the issue but that they had no new parts to correct the problem....ummm. Until we have a part # or a TSB with what they should do, I don't know what to believe.
Well, I just spoke to the service manager at my dealership yesterday, cause I thought I had the "new" brake pads on order. It turns out they are just the pads to fix the squeaking while cold TSB, which my car is already equipped with (build 02/04). He said that while they have had a couple complaints about grooving and grinding on the rear rotors, there was no fix for it yet. He called Mazda Canada on my insistence and called me back, but no luck. Mazda Canada said there is no fix in the works at this time. He told me to hang on for now as having my pads replaced under warranty would just net me a new set of the pads I've already got and some machined rotors.

This sucks especially since the parts counter chick told me she had ordered the "new" pads to fix this problem, turns out they were just the pads I already have. For now all I can suggest is everyone contact their dealer and have them call Mazda Canada or USA and report the customers concern. Perhaps if we have enough dealers calling they'll feel pressured to address the problem. Of course this only works if enough people actually take action.

Rear brake issues..Some of the problem is the coating that the rear rotor used to help the rotor from rusting. They didn't clean it from the pad mating area prior to installing them on the car. When the pad heats up it actually absorbs the chemical and balls up between the pad and rotor.(hence the grooves in the rotor)

Most recent directive is to replace the rear pads and turn the rotors.
dealer comments- backorder

Had my car in at the dealer here in Toronto and he said that the part (spacer) for the brakes to alleviate the squealing is on back order [officially] till October (!). I am checking with them in two weeks to see if there is any progress.
But what about the dust? We all know this problem and it is a problem because its not normal even if the dealer tell me its normal. At almost every stop light I look at other cars out there and the front wheels are dirty, NOT THE REAR. Every car I have drove for the last 10 years, the front wheels got dirty & not the rear. It also took ALOT longer (as far as milage) to get dirty. Basic physics tell you that front breaks work harder. Talk to your local break shop & they will tell you that front breaks need to be replaced two to three times untill the rear breaks need to be replaced...................... So why is it that there is excessive amounts of dust on the rear wheels. Its obvious its from the break pads. Its not normal & dont let get away with saying that it is.

I have over 8,000 miles on my car & at this point I do not believe the "break in period" theory.

We must not stop in letting Mazda aware of this problem & that we want it fixed. Call Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500 & let them know. Dont stop here, they will tell you that you need to have a service guy look at it & make a report but its ok, we will have to jump though some hoops. The time you invest could pay off for all Mazda owners because if there is enough documented problems they will not be able to ignore it any longer. A recall will have to be anounced.

my dealership says to me, " We'll let our shop foreman take it out, and see if the brakes need to be replaced." he gets back with my car in 5 min, "nope, brakes are fine. No wobbling, no loss in breaking." I'm like, I DIDN'T ASK YOU TO FIND THAT OUT, I WANT TO MAKE THE BRAKE DUST STOP!!! Why can't you guys just turn my rotors and put new pads on? " Well, the pads aren't covered under warranty, and the rotors have to be warped for us to replace them." I just got pissed off and grabbed my keys from him and said, " I guess this is why you guys have such a bad reputation out here in AZ!! Your service to your customer SUCKS DICK!!!" Got in my car and drove away. I'm going to be going to another mazda dealership a little farther away, but hopefully better service!
i visited the dealership today for my oil change and another service matter. i mentioned to the guy that i had pretty bad brake dust on the rear wheels and he promised to investigate.

end result: the new brake pads that mazda developed are out and he ordered me a set. should be in next week and hopefully this will fix the problem. it's ruining my mojo to have to clean the damn wheels every 3 days!

Hello everyone! i'm new here but i just wanted to add that I also visited the dealership this last saturday for the brake noise and oil change.
The mechanic said that mazda had made a new brake pads and that they were going to order them.
Hopefully this saturday i'll get my new pads and if i'm lucky he said, he would try to change the front ones too.
I have a 05/04 build date and my rear brakes still dust like crazy. I need to wash her every 7-10 days.
