Posted this in my gallery in the multimedia section, but I think it's worthy of its own post. :p

Update....Finished up a project with the help of my little brother. It is a project that I put on hold when I bought the Mazdaspeed3, a custom gauge pod that sits in the place of the ashtray/cig lighter panel. It's a first-cut design that looks pretty nice. Other than making the top portion of the plate a little wider, there is pretty much little room for any improvement :D

The pod holds 3 gauges in a triangular configuration and is constructed out of a plate of 0.1" thick T6061 aluminum plate & painted a nice satin black. We were planning on matching the profile/curvature of the existing ciglighter/asthray, but due to spacing constraints in the area we had to make the plate flatter than planned. Nonetheless, the outcome was pretty good. As for the gauges themselves, we chose to use the basic Prosport (amber/white) oil pressure, oil temperature, and voltmeter gauges. They are wired for white daytime illumination and amber nighttime illumination. Unfortunately, the oil pressure gauge isn't illuminating properly and i'll have a replacement shipped to me within a few days. As pictured, the oil pressure and temp sender/units haven't been hooked up....so they are reading incorrectly. The voltmeter is correctly wired. Some may say that the gauges aren't in the optimum placement for continous viewing, but it is still good for the occasional glance at traffic lights and in light traffic. Also, it makes for good eye candy for a mere $100 and it leaves that center vent area open for that future flip up LCD screen upgrade. :D I'll try to get some more pics (particularly driver's perspective & night shots) by Sunday evening.

First-cut at custom gaugepod for my little brother's Mz3...and a pretty damn good first-cut if I do say so myself :D

Re: One-off custom gauge pod in ashtray/cig lighter area

Sorry for the delay in responding. I now have a neice. :D My big sister just had her first child this afternoon, a girl. It has to be the cutest little thing that I have ever seen. So my plans of hooking up the oil gauges to the senders this afternoon went out the window and was put on hold.

Honestly...I haven't considered making these and putting it for sale, but if you guys want me to make them I guess I can. :D I was just seeking your opinions on the placement & design. I cut it to just the right size that it is simply friction fitted in place w/o the need for any extra hardware or screws. The $100 value that I posted was just how much I spent on just the 3 gauges alone. The oil gauges utilize the 2.3L -> 2.0L filter conversion kit + sandwich adaptor plate ( $39 and $35, respectively). I had some aluminum plate stashed away and used it to make the panel, so that was essentially a freebie. So total out-of-pocket price for this mod for me was about $175. Needless to say w/ the postive input, this mod will have a happy home in my MS3 relatively soon. :D

If there is enough demand here, I guess I can go ahead and sell the panel by itself and leave it up to you guys to buy the 52mm gauges that you want. I will work in batches of 4 panels. If demand evolves to 1/100th of what the deadpedal plate demand was, I will make a waitlist for it. I did a quick materials break-down and just for the T6061 aluminum plate alone it would be about $6per panel. So ballpark figure for a gauge panel would be about $28 shipped (unpainted) and $30 shipped (painted either satin black or gloss metallic silver). Just give me about 4 confirmed buyers and I will get the ball rolling on this for you guys and slap a post in the Bronze sponsorship section. I need confirmed buyers in order to renew my bronze sponsership dues (~$25/month) and sell my 'wares the forums.

Now without further ado....night shots. And yes, I will be reverting back to stock amber/orange led lighting for the Mz3 radio. The triangular configuration pretty much was a result of the spacing constraints to the void left by the removal of the stock ashtray/cig lighter panel. Nonetheless, it pretty much matches the gauge cluster at night....even up to the blue ambient lighting around the dial. ;)

That setup is very slick.

Besides the cost for the meters, how much would it cost for someone to install these for me? Is it something VERY easy (lack of tools, space, knowledge) or something best left to a "pro"?

it's easy to install gauges. most require basic wiring as they tap into existing wires on the car.
