2009 Mazdaspeed 3 w/ MS CAI + CP-E TIP

vs.

200x Mitsubishi Evolution IX, stock

Don't remember how fast we started, but I was in 2nd gear. Then me and my friend went for it.

Results?
Well I didn't beat him, but he couldn't pull on me either. I'm fairly satisfied that I kept up with his EVO. He was surprised he didn't pull away from me either.

I'm surprised you didn't pull away from him. I ran a stock Evo IX when I was totally stock and he couldn't pull away from me. Evo X's on the other hand (in stock trim), are a little slower compared to the IX's.

once you take the standing start out of the equation EVO's and STi's are not particularly fast cars unless modified.

our cars do pretty well from a roll, I have no idea what kind of mods this guy had, but I raced a TT Supra from a roll....I was actually starting behind him in 2nd gear when he took off...had a 3 car lead on me, by the end of 4th I was in the other lane now slightly ahead of him.

To be honest, I was surprised I didn't pull away from him too. I'm pretty sure with an intake+inlet, we're making very similar power at the crank. The fact that his AWD system loses more power than our FWD, and he claims his car is heavier at 3200lbs.

I guess we just have crappy gearing, which Mazda addressed in the 2nd gen.

Still happy that I was able to keep up with his EVO.

our gearing is excellent. personally I don't like the 2nd Gen gearing as much...its only better on paper for 0-60 sprints because you save one shift. overall the more aggressive gearing on the gen 1 is better for performance IMO.

I've ran a couple of EVO IX's and with a few mods they give you a run for your money. One EVO had clutch, intake, fuel pump, and untuned and he pulled 2 cars on me.

I have a race setup with my friend and his EVO X. He's got a drop in filter, exhaust and tune. We will see.........

I see. A lowly NA 3 driving peasant like myself wouldn't know about the glorious mods of a boosted car. Even though this place seems to look down on street racing or any sort of fun, it's good to hear about this stuff. Pick up a turbo-back/tune and put the hurt on them Evos!

Peasant! Haha, kidding.

Street racing is only a no-no when its brought up on public forums. I would care to bet that >99% of us have taken part in some kind of street racing adventures...some just more than others.

ps - street racing isn't just limited to you racing someone else. You can definitely get a street racing ticket for hot-rodding around by yourself.

TIP is STILL a rapper, just so people know. Haha

Yeah man, EVO's are stupid fast. But I'm still happy that I kept up with him with just ~$300 of mods. My friend was surprised too like I said.

I definitely don't encourage street racing of any kind. But my friend was just interested in seeing how fast these Mazdaspeed's are. We had a run and that was it. He actually wanted to go again but I said no, since the point was already proven. If we went again, it'll probably just come down to a driver's race.

Now I'm not knocking down an EVO just because I own a Mazdaspeed, but the Mazdaspeed's cabin is such a nicer place to be compared to the EVO's. And I have 90% of their fun. Good enough for me!
