Personally, I don't think the red outside lights would look all that bad, as long as you had a black car. That way the inner light would blend into the body color, and you wouldn't really notice that the tail lights were different.

People have done some photoshops of painted tails, and they looked sweet. The problem is that if you looked at it from any angle but directly behind, it would look fucked up.
