I do not want my mazda 3 hatch to be real loud but I want performance. I was thinking of putting headers as well as a high flow cat and keeping the stock exhaust cat back. My question is would this be a waste of money or would I get a little more power threw this. Thanks, in advance for any advice.

you're wasting your money if you dont free up the entire exhaust.

Id suggest going with an exhaust that has a silencer, that way when you dont want to be loud, pop that in. Tonight I was driving my car with my g\f and her mom to dinner a good distance away, and my exhaust actually started to annoy me. For me I think it was the fact they were both sleeping and I wanted to turn my music up a bit since I never have it that low. Oh well. Next time I end up taking them out I wouldnt mind a silencer.

ya, thats not right, your increasing your ability to scavange off the head's exhaust velosity when you add a header, it's not all about restriction like everyone thinks, how much scavenge do you think you get when there is a cat in the stock header, if you eliminate this cat, you have just removed the BIGGEST restriction in the exhaust......period........headers primary purpuse to make power is improving on scavenge by utilizing exhaust velosity to help suck more air into the cylinder from the vacume created by the rushing gass out of the exhaust, and this will do just as much if not more than a cat back, and won't sound loud, just a lil more throut to the sound
LC got an headers system and not aftermarket exhaust.
he is much faster than when he just had his intake.
he shaved 0.7 on his 1/4 mile time.
and he sounds just like stock, a little more noise inside and vibration but outside he sounds almost stock.
if you get rid of the CAT and get a test pipe you will get slightly louder, but not much, our stock exhaust is good at keeping it low, i mean that muffler is doing that job jsut fine.
i was about to do this mod, but i could not find a single shop hear that would do this for me, even if i tell them it is for a track only car.
hi, im new to the forum and i own a 05' mazda 3. ive added the mazdaspeed catback exhaust and mazdaspeed intake. the next thing i want to put on is the headers and i hear that obx is good so i was thinking about that. i was wondering what the job intails and if i should do it or have it profeesionally done. and if i should have it profesionally done where should i get it done and who could do it. after this i was gonna add a throttle body (same questions for that). i also wanted to know about gains in sound of the car with all three/four parts on the car as it pertains to how it was totally stock. thank u
i just wanted to know really if the job is easy enough to do alone or should i have someone else do it so if anybody has done either/or, id like some input
run a search on headers, ag bullet has a nice easy read on installing his header. that'll give you an idea of what you're up against. it will also give you an idea of the kind of sound you'll be getting, since he has arguably the best clips of a header on here.
if that looks too complicated for you, have a shop that deals in this sort of thing install it for you. or have someone you know who is in to this sort of thing help you do it, you'll learn a lot. if you have a shop do it, for the love of god make sure they do it right and are well versed in an anti-fouler fix or something of that nature.
the throttle body question is a moot point because we have electronically-operated throttle bodies and nobody makes a replacement yet. if you want to do something with that then i would suggest running an 8g wire ground from the negative battery terminal to a bolt on the tb.
gains should be somewhere in the area of 15-20whp for intake/header/exhaust.
the obx header does not include a flex-pipe, be mindful of that.
