I was test driving my 2008 Mazdaspeed 3 after replacing the right transmission output seal and changing the transmission fluid. I was driving at a medium aggressive pace, and right at the end of the drive it started making a ticking/knocking noise. I figured it was the timing chain, it was fairly loose. So I replaced the tensioner and vvt gear instead of everything because I was planning on selling it. When I put the motor back together the chain was nice and tight, and it was still making the ticking noise but it started and idled just fine. Did I get the timing wrong or could it be the valve lifters or a rod knock?
