Re: Have you replaced your brake pads yet? what choices do we have?

I enjoy the autoexe streets, dustings not too bad and they have a nice bite with less fade than stock. I think you would be more suited with the sport ones since you AX so much. I'm look at some of the hawk and ebc pads as well but I'm not sure how the pades and caliper design compares to a stock 3. I can check at work tomorrow

right now i am actually leaning toward the Hawk HP Plus, those autoexe's are nice, but their stuff is so dang expensive since its JDM yo! ;)

Re: Mazdaspeed 3 brake pad availability guide (of sorts)

I know you auto-x alot, but just curious to how many miles you have?

Re: Mazdaspeed 3 brake pad availability guide (of sorts)

12,842 miles
I just put my snow tires on today, so I happened to write down the mileage a few hours ago ;)

the outter pads and inner rears show no wear, the inside fronts are
I have pics, gonna post them up to the first thread in a few seconds. (edit: pics are up)

I think I would go with the Hawk HP Plus as well. I can't find where you can buy them though. Any vendors on here that you know of sell them?

Re: Mazdaspeed 3 brake pad availability guide (of sorts)

brakesolutionsplus is the best place i have found them so far.
gonna do a bit more searching tonight before I order.

basically you need to search by the part number, not by the car. you will most likely be buying pads for an audi A4 or volvo S50, or some other random cars.

OEM Fronts $130 through mazdaspeed motorsports (if you are sponsored), how much from dealers?

Pricey...

do not go with ceramic pads unless you want to reduce your stopping power. Sure those are cheap, for a reason.

Glad to know that...

What material is used oem?

#15 ·
I am not positive, but it looks like a fero-carbon metallic, much like the material used in the hawk hps

the oem pads actually have a tad more surface area than the hawk hps in the front and rear. They are marginally larger, but enough so to notice.

Does anyone know the size of the bit needed to remove the caliper?
[/quote]

I just looked, it's a 7mm allen. It's not the torx head bolts. The allen are under a black plastic cap that you can pry off with a small screwdriver.

Just curious, how many miles can I expect to get out of my 08 MS3 front and rear pads? - moderate driving, no racing.

after inspecting my pads i noticed the inner pad wasnt as bad as I thought. I would say with normal spirited driving you should get 30-40k on the pads if not more. I have 13k now and i prolly could have run mine another 10k easily if I wasnt concerned with autocrosses.

I'd agree with this, although I certainly don't have enough mileage to say for sure. I rotated the tires again at 10K and checked inner and outer pads. No noticable difference in wear. Actually, the pads look barely touched. But, I'm not hard on the brakes very often. Moderate driving, as you said. I've only auto-xed this car once, and I'm not typically that hard on the brakes on the back-roads, since I like to leave a huge margin for error.

There was some indication on the forums that the rear pads wear faster, possibly a LOT faster. But, I couldn't see any evidence of that personally. Maybe there was a finish problem on some early production rotors?

I think the rear pads wearing down fast is only on the regular 3 and not the speed3.

#24 ·
Rears on the Speed 3 also wear down faster than fronts, especially when running track days. Only got 7,000 miles on rears!

#25 ·
Can't believe this thread isn't stickied. Anyway I've never ordered pads before and need some now for the front, so here comes the stupid question: Do they come 4 to a set or will I have to order two sets. For example the listing on topbrakes.com show the hawk hps for around $100 quantity 1. I'm assuming I just need to order one set, right?

#26 ·
They usually come in pairs: Front or Rear as you don't want to run with a new pad on a side and a worn one on the other.

So quantity 1 means a pair of Front or Rear since they aren't the same.
