Got this from another board.

We are actually going to build an all-motor drag race car outta the new Mazda 3.
It will be attending all the NHRA sport compact races nationwide in 2004.
Expected to make 350+ WHP out ot the Mazda I4 2.3L.
Expected to run 9.60 in the 1/4 mile with no turbo and no NOS.
Here is a rendering of what it will look like. Should be pretty cool.

I'll believe it when I see it.

I believe you can already buy race-tuned 2.0L Duratec engines with 280bHP, and that's a motor with a much longer expected life than one built for drag racing. Throw in higher displacement of the 2.3, additional tweaking, and I am surprised they only expect 350HP from the 2.3.

How will they get that make HP?? RPMs, RPMs, RPMs. Those all motor hondas pulling 9's wind up to 11,000. Its not that hard with a standalone computer, but with a power band of 9-11,000 RPM its not practical for the street. Huge efficient intake runners, big ports and big valves in the cylinder head, custom TB and camshafts. Big money but possible for sure. Believe me when I say that the engine that they build will utilize very few of the original parts.

Well, a few of you on here seem to be a little skeptical on our car. This is a Mazdaspeed backed program and will be completed and running within the next 2 to 3 months. Our goal is 350 WHP ( approx. 430 BHP ) and if you look at this forum you will see what it involves.

If any of you are unfamiliar with front wheel drive drag racing, it is like racing for the dyslexic. I know it may look a little funny to you, but check out www.NHRAimport.com . This is one of the fastest growing forms of motorsports anywhere. So large in fact that vehicle manufacturers recognize it and participate in it. Come check out one of our races near you, look on the NHRA Sport Compact site for a schedule. You may be a little interested!

I'm a bit skeptical of 350 all motor. But I suppose you can look at other similar I4 engines of that displacement for a guage. Good luck.

Remember guys, he's probably going to be gutting the thing as well. And those tires? For a sub 10 sec 1/4, you bet he needs them!
