The reason im asking is because i bought a momo shifter and there is alot of space between the bottom of the shifter and the boot
perhaps if i buy the momo boot it would help me out..

The metal ring is not removable (unles you destroy it). You have to buy the PERFORMANCE MOMO shift boot so it can actually go over that ring and screw directly to your MOMO shifter. Hope that helps ;)

Use a dremel or similar tool to shave the metal round disk like thing on the shifter, or you could also use a hack saw or similar cutting tool to cut some length from the stick. YeeHaw!! Duct tape and beer!

do most aftermarket shift knobs fit well or is some mod. needed once you get the factory one off?
They fit well if you remove the metal ring we talked about. If not then you are better off buying a shifter boot and the new shifter knob from the same brand.
